Moving from US to Canada?
-
Okay so my girlfriend is planing on moving up to live with me in Canada from the US next November and we have no idea what to do... I know someone just can not go from the US to Canada and just live there so what do we need to let that happen so she can live here? We are engaged and will be married before 2011 hopefully but i don't know if that will help get her here to Canada... Also she has some stuff of hers we will have to send up that just won't fit in carry on bags for a airplane what is the best way to ship items from US to Canada and be save and cheap? And how much would all this cost to move from US to Canada? Anyone please answer this and help us? We never traveled or anything and are blank... We don't know how to get her here how much money we will need or what will let her live in Canada so could someone please tell me all this stuff if they know it?

Answer:
You may sponsor her (as a spouse, common law partner or conjugal partner) to come to Canada as a permanent resident but there's still a long way to go.She'll need to go through the immigration process like everybody else.Check out the link below for more info.Hope this helps and good luck. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse-apply-how.asp

You should sponsor your girlfriend after you get married. Otherwise, it is not possible for her to enter Canada as a permanent resident. This link may be helpful; http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/index.asp

Yep, you have to go through Canada Immigration. Be warned: it's time consuming and expensive. As far as shipping your stuff, I guess you could just send it via the USPS, or if you don't mind spending a bit more, UPS, although I don't know if they're any faster or more reliable.

I have road a car al the way from Indiana to Vancouver, took like a couple of week can't really remember maybe 7 days, stayed in a bunch of motels, hotels, bed and breakfasts
this is the end
Your girlfriend has to apply for immigration status. She can come and visit you for 180 days in a year, but that's all until she gets a visa (student visa, work visa or whatever) or is granted permanent residence. As for shipping - that's almost impossible to estimate because it is based on a combination of weight and volume and I have no idea how much 'stuff' you want to move. Truck is probably the cheapest say.

Old lady is only technically right. Your girl friend can legally come to Canada for 6 months at a time without applying for permanent residency, but only has to cross the US border for a few minutes to rturn for another 6 months. For your forever plans, note that in Canada one does not have to get married to be a legal spouse. Couples only need to cohabit for a year for the designation.
