What will happen if you lose your passport?

If i show up to the Canadian boarder from Alaska without my passport what will happen?

  • We live in Alaska and are wanting to move to Texas, we want to drive but it order to do that you have to have a passport to cross the boarder into and then back out of Canada. I have my passport card and the birth certs for my children but all my husband has is his old passport from when he was like 10 and his birth cert. If we get his passport then it will take 4 weeks for it to get to us and he need to be in Texas before that for a job interview. ANYway....If we just show up at the boarder will they let us through with his old passport and his birth cert and SSN card or will they make us turn around and go home?

  • Answer:

No they will not let you cross without the appropriate documentation = passport. You should also be aware that if wither you or your husband has a criminal record you may be inadmissible to Canada, no mater if you have your passport or not. Certain offenses, including just one single DUI will get you banned from entering into, or traveling through Canada. If you are not allowed in you will be driving back to Tok where you will stay until you can figure out an alternative to driving through Canada. Add to that the road conditions right now. Many businesses (including service stations) in the Yukon are closed for the winter. not to mention the price of gas. If your trip is really time sensitive you may be better off flying.

No, they will not just let him in. he must have a valid passport. If he applies and requests that it be expedited, pays the fee and the express mail fees, he can get it in 2 to 3 weeks. Or, he can use one of the private agencies that charge an extra fee. They can get it in a few days. They are licensed by the U.S. government to do that.

Yes they will turn you away, & Alaska is not participating in the enhanced Drivers License program. Enrolling in NEXUS program will take less time, but he may not qualify. You could take the ferry, if you can drive to Ketchikan CUSTOMS ID Requirements After June 1, 2009 all U.S. citizens travelling through Canada will be required to show their passport. Driver's licenses or birth certificates alone may no longer be accepted as proof of citizenship. Traveling onboard an AMHS vessel between Bellingham, Washington and Ketchikan, Alaska these rules and restrictions do not apply, although the vessel travels through Canadian waters. You might want to pay to get the passport expidited.

Technically, you don't need a passport to get into Canada. Just a driver's licence is enough. However, to get back into the USA, you do need a passport. That is US law, and nothing to do with Canada. So, the problem is getting back into the USA. And, as you can't leave Canada without the passport, the authorities here generally want to see one, even though there is no actual requirement.

your not going through Canada full stop, you even need a passport to re enter the US on the other side of Canada.......USA made this law

You can request expedited service from the passport office for an additional fee. Everyone needs a passport. Otherwise, you will be turned away. A birth cert and SSN card aren't valid anymore for getting through Canada. A passport that out of date is only good for scrapbook.

Sorry, but without a passport or other approved ID which, for a resident of Alaska would include, besides your passport, a passport card or Nexus card your husband will not be able to enter Canada or cross back into the US without great difficulty. Under US law that came into effect June 1, 2009 all people entering the US, including US Citizens must have a passport. Your best bet would be to fly, or for your husband to fly, to Texas for the interview. In the interim he can apply for his passport.

You'll all get in, except your husband. But - see if he can get an enhanced driver's license - that will allow him to pass because it has most of the information on it that a passport.
