Do Visitors to Canada need a work permit to work at Tim Hortons?

  • I plan on visiting, and staying, in Canada for about 6 months. In that time I will need a job to sustain myself. I know that some jobs do not require a work permit for foreigners. Would a Tim Hortons or McDonald's job fall under this category? I am a born and raised US Citizen, I am considering Immigrating to Canada, but before I make such a massive life choice, I want to live there for 6 months to a year and just see if it's all I think it is.

    If you know that some jobs don't LEGALLY require a work visa, you know something that the rest of us don't. The reality is: You can stay a maximum of 6 months on a tourist visa which does NOT allow you to work at all. Period. Plus you have to show that you are capable of supporting yourself whil you are in Canada. Of course, if you find a dishonest employer, you can work for cash but then you're risking being arrested and deported and never being allowed into Canada again. It's highly unlikely that a large company like Tim Hortons or Mickie Dee would take the risk of heavy fines for paying illegal aliens under the table.

Under no circumstances can foreigners work in Canada without a work permit. Whoever told you that you can work at some places like Tim Horton's or McDonald's without a work permit is either mistaken or pulling your leg. As for you wanting to immigrate here, it isn't so easy. It will take a long time (think a couple of years) and you would have to first qualify to come here. Please consider, too, that we are in the midst of a recession and that there is a very long lineup for immigration.
