How do I become a Police Officer in Ontario?

Can I be a Police Officer in Canada (specifically London Ontario) Then somehow take the job to U.S.A (La)?

  • So yeah the tital sais it all, can I get a degree and earn the full rights to work as a Police Officer but take the job in U.S.A, (Specifically L.a california) More clearly, what I'm asking is can you study and qualify being a police officer in Canada, London Ontario and take all this to U.S.A. to become a police officer there? Or do I have to study in U.S.A. become a us citizen and work in u.s.a please give me a detailed answer, thank you so much!

  • Answer:

I've been a cop in Canada for 27 years now and never once have I heard of someone studying and earning the right to be one. Many applicants have a criminal justice education, either at the community college or university level, however many come from other trades and careers. Its not like someone MUST go to police related schooling before becoming a cop. Once someone IS hired however they are sent off to one of the various police colleges for what amounts to "basic training" and then they go to work. Their department pays for that training and one must be a member of a police department to take the training. Someone can't just go to the Ontario Police College or the Atlantic Police College (for example) and then farm themselves out to work at what ever department will hire them. Now, IF someone gets hired by a Canadian police department and gets trained then they are free to go and apply where ever else they may want to apply to. More to the point of your question however is "will US police departments recognize the training from Canada...and perhaps the experience?" Most likely not. Our laws, our policies and practices and our legal systems are totally different. I'm sure some Cdn cops do quit up here and do get eventually hired in the US but it's not like it happens often. If you want to know about citizenship requirements for applicants you will have to check out the LAPD site or the site for what ever department you may want to join.

Firas, you must become a US Citizen, passing your OPP will earn you some brownie points, but you will still need to go to the California Police Academy.

I used to work with a guy who was from the UK and was a cop over there and in Canada (he was an ex-cop once again when he was working with me). His back story was that he met a Canadian woman in the UK & he quit his job & moved to Canada but he had to start over. He eventually got a job again with Canadian police. . That's all very complicated & it was quite the life changer. Basically, I've never heard of police officers "transferring" from a Canadian police force to a US police force & back. I can't see why the US would need police officers from other countries. They have well over 300 million people, they must have a big enough potential pool of talent who want a career in law enforcement. I would say you need to emigrate to the US in the first place & then try and become a police officer from there.
