Road trip to canada - banff, what all should I bring?
-
my route im doing with my college buddies will be like this. tn to chicago to minnapolis to rapid city to glacier then to canada (banff in canadian rockies), then back down to salt lake, denver, wichita, then home. I have a list of my own, im mainly going to be camping. However I wanted the minds of a bunch of people to list off what they would bring then itd help me figure out if im missing anything that would be helpful. I'll be in a 08 corrolla so whatever ya think can fit in a sudan with 3 people, meaning no canoes on it X-P (and yep im bringing a tent.) Best answer will be based upon what i may think be the overall best list for this 2 week road trip or whoever makes me add the most things to the current list I have. disregard money. please throw your opinions, and I wish I could pick more than one best answer for this but you all would be helping out a lot by doing this. a million minds (on yahoo) think better than just 3 of us that are going. -thanks

Answer:
BRING A PAPER MAP your gizmo's do not always work in the mountains from Salt lake to Banff. You can reserve camp-sites ahead both in Canada and the US. When there is not HIGH FIRE DANGER depends on local weather, you are usually permitted a camping and or a cooking fire bring fire starting material matches/lighter a few things to cook with over the fire or wrapped in Aluminium foil shiny side out beside the fire on the hot coals. Clothes hanger wire works great for dogs and marshmallows.Bring sturdy walking/hiking boots.(low rise is fine) Temperature varies greatly during the day. What you take depends on where you are going to stop. If the campgrounds have grills, you don't need as many food prep items. My cousin goes camping all the time and finds that the smallest items do just fine. You don't need a multi-burner camp stove to cook a single pot. Think small. If your campsite has electricity, you can use an immersion coil to heat a cup of water easily without cranking up the stove. After recent bear attacks out west, he has started packing bear spray. You can't take it on a plane, but you are fine in the car. I've also heard Jack Hanna say to use wasp/hornet spray because you can shoot it from many yards away. You should still be able to find lots of microfleece throws on sale for about $5 at Walmart/Kmart left over from winter. They are extremely lightweight and extremely warm. Keep them handy in the car in case of breakdowns in bad weather, plus toss inside your sleeping bag for extra warmth. I keep one in my car 24/7 (it's great when one side of the car is in hot sun and the other in cold shade). Don't go all weird with camping food or it will break the bank. I did a trip from FL to ME with two boxes of provisions. Healthy cereals, tuna, shelf-stable entrees, shelf-stable milk, water, Gatorade, peanut butter, PB crackers, individual canned fruit bowls, nuts, trail mix, etc. pack easy. Watch the salt content and go easy on the crap. Supplement with fresh bagged veggies from the grocery as you drive through a town. Since you will be driving all the way, you can easily replenish items, so you don't need to stock up on everything before you go. It killed me to buy single-serve things rather than the more economical sizes, but it works best. I also bought a quart of fresh milk each morning for cereal and coffee, and drank the rest for breakfast. My best investment was a set of four reusable plastic bowls. Since there are more of you, allow two bowls per person. They should have them in the seasonal aisle at Walmart about now. They are useful for eating as well as putting out a bowl of nuts or baby carrots. Also get some reusable plastic plates. It is much easier to eat takeout on a plate than in a wrapper. And take a set of real metal cutlery to eat with -- plastic forks get old real fast. Depending on how much food prep you are going to do in camp, you might pack a flexible cutting board (it is just a sheet of heavy plastic). Don't forget a sharp paring knife and something to store it in. And a small bottle of Joy to wash everything. Word of warning about the weather. I went to Banff on July 4 one year with beautiful summer weather. A friend went on the same day a year later and it was snowing. Be prepared for anything! Rain, snow, hot temps. If it isn't already on the itinerary, you need to stop at the Crazy Horse Monument near Rapid City. And you ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, must stop at Devil's Tower National Monument. Be sure to watch "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" before you go. Allow time to explore there. EDIT - Crow is full of it. Americans are welcomed in Banff. In fact they celebrate July 4 at both Banff and Lake Louise. Remember you need proper documents to cross the border. See http://canada.usembassy.gov/traveling_to_canada/passport-requirements.html

You should bring light weight layering pieces to wear, its really nice in Banff but it can get cool at night. Camping gear is good. I can't remember if you can reserve ahead of time your camping sites.
