When can I get my drivers licence?

Can a Canadian Drivers licence work in the USA? or would i need to get an international licence?

  • I am Canadian and I'm planning a trip to Florida. I'm looking to rent a car when i arrive, but i need to know if i need to get an international licence or not to drive a car in the states. Also are there car companies in Florida that would rent to someone of 18 years with full divers licence?

  • Answer:

Your license is good in Florida but the rental companies have different policies for renting to younger people. Some 25 some 21 some may be 18 need to check with the company on their policy for Florida (not the same in each state)

you dont need an american license as long as you are visiting, but if you are looking into permanent residence, you definetly need a new license. Car companies will rent to anybody as long as you are 18 and have a valid credit card.

You`re fine, I drove in the US with my Canadian drivers license I was pulled over for booking it down the highway, the cop just gave me a warning because I was from out of the country and probably knew I wasn`t going to pay it.

A Canadian license is better than Int'l one for USA, perhaps not Europe. I've lived at border many years, and many, many Canadians drive here and likewise for USA drivers there. Both sides want more business from across the border. But post 9/11 a PASSPORT became FAR more necessary. USA person could get locked out of USA returning w/o one and some special driver licenses or frequency permits were in operation for a while, but late last year the Passport gained further ascendancy, very close to mandatory for all, and Canada did the same. A young Canadian with a rented car is at GREAT, humongous risk of having it stolen in FL. The stolen vehicles are en route overseas by 2d week. Make sure you are covered by insurance, paying long years for a dead horse you did not kill is rough. If the Car Rental does not like you it will have to do with AGE mainly, and the dislike is for everyone, including Americans, owing to terrible driving records of young age group, primarily males. You'll need a credit card, peculiar -- cash does not fly in this case like $10,000 limit on card. If you have CLEAN driving record for your Canadian Province, bring Official Copy, preferably Notarized, with you. Obey the posted speeds, photos are taken of violators and they will collect to help with depressed budgets. Grief comes by mail, just as Ontario does to USA by the way... A rental vehicle will attract MORE attention in all ways, incl. collecting fine.. Flat places in heavy rain cause hydroplaning, where you STOP long after the red light 'cause you were driving too fast for the water on the road. Worse if other vehicles were coming across, the cement mixer weighs and has less trouble. Insurance scam artists slam on breaks for youngster following too close (all the time, why?). Big industry, collects from your insurance or you.

If I'm not mistaken I think most rental places require you to be 21 and have a credit card I would think your drivers licence would be fine but I would find some rental places on the net were you plan to go and call or email them with your questions.
