Answer:
You can use your own phone and just get a new SIM card and credit when you're there. I did that, but beware, it is not cheap. We got ripped off in Brampton at a mall kiosk and they locked our phone and then charged us $30 to unlock it. I think it cost us over $100 just to have a mobile for a few days. It just wasn't worth it.

It used to be $25 at fido, my brother gave it to me, the card. I`m using an old cell phone.
It depends which company you go with. Each company has its own phones that run on its own networks. You can't bring in a phone from another country and expect it to work with a company here or go between companies here and keep your phone. The biggest are Telus, Rogers, Bell and Fido. They all have pre-paid and monthly billed options. With all companies you can sign up for a contact plan and get a decent phone for under $40 with a 3-yr or less contract. You will walk away with your phone right away. The lowest pre-paid plan around is for $15/month, but you will pay full price for the phone. Virgin and President's Choice also offer pre-paid plans with decent phones. You can buy them at many different stores for about $100 or less and walk away with the phone with pre-loaded airtime. They're a good option if you don't plan on staying in Canada for long or you just need a phone for emergencies or infrequent usage. The quality of your service is dependent on your provider and your phone. I have been with Bell, Rogers and Fido and have found Rogers and Bell to be the best providers with their Nokia and Samsung phones. Fido was the worst with jammed signals and dropped calls. Fido piggy backs off of Rogers so that may have someting to do with it. I hear Telus is good too, but have never had a mobile account with them. I have a monthly plan with Rogers with all calling features, unlimited eves and weekends from 5pm-9am and 1000 daytime mins plus unlimited incoming calls for $53/month. I signed a 3-yr contract and got a brand new Nokia for $20.
