What to pack for Vancouver trip?

Planning a trip to Vancouver,BC Canada, But I want to take my dog???can I?

  • In early October I and about 5 friends will be making a trip to Vancouver for sight seeing, shopping and horseback riding. But I will be bring my 6lb Yorkshire terrier and one of my friends will be bringing his 8lb Yorkshire. We are coming from Virginia, and we are staying at the Marriott Vancouver Pinnacle Downtown or Hyatt Regency Vancouver. My questions are: 1) Can our dogs ride with us on the plane, since they are really small? or do they have to 2) Do shops in Downtown Vancouver ban dogs from coming into the stores?(they will most likely be in their bags) 3) Do our dogs only need proof of rabies to enter into Canada? 4) Are there any have to see sights you would like to recommend?

  • Answer:

    1) Yes they can. I believe it costs somewhere around 100 dollars per dog though. You can keep them in a kennel cab and they will go with all the special luggage :( or you can put them in one of those dog carrier bags and put them under your seat. 2) Some shops will and some shops wont. If they are in their bags I don't think they will have a problem with it but some stores might. I know Shoppers Drug Mart allows dogs in their stores and of course, pet stores to as well. 3) I believe so but I'm not positive. I took my dog camping across the border in washington and I think we needed to show some of her ppapers. Just bring them in case. 4) Burns Bog, Playland, Granville Island, Stanley Park, Japa Dog, Downtown Vancouver, Grouse Grind.

Check with the airline to see what rules they have about flying with dogs. They're all a bit different. For getting into Canada, proof of rabies vaccination, a paper certificate from the vet, is all you need. Dogs in carriers are very often but not always allowed in stores etc. Dogs walking on their own four feet are not allowed in most stores in Vancouver and I personally find it a bit arrogant of the owners of tiny dogs when they ignore "no dogs allowed" signs because "he's only a small dog". A dog is a dog. Restaurants or any place that serves food and drink aren't supposed to admit dogs no matter how they're getting in the door unless they're seeing eye dogs. Frankly, bringing a dog along on a city holiday seems a little silly to me since having the dog with you makes for complications when it can't go to some places. And very few hotels are happy about guests leaving dogs in rooms unaccompanied.

You need to check with the airline you are traveling with about whether your pet can travel in the cabin with you. Some do, many don't. Basically if the pet and it's carrier can fit under the seat, they will let it travel with you. Check as well to see if they require a specific pet carrier. Some airlines are really fussy. When you contact the airline, they will likely be able to tell you about the requirements regarding rabies shots etc. Some stores will not allow your dogs to enter unless they are service dogs. But this varies from company to company. Some will turn a blind eye to a small dog. Don't even try to go to a restaurant though. None will let the dogs in. Have you checked with the hotel about their pet policies? Some do not allow pets. Better check before getting their.

Check with your airline and the hotel regarding their policies on pets. I once saw this huge dog in a shoe store once. Not sure if it was one of those "helper" dogs. I guess it'd depend on the store. You'd be better off to have someone take care of your dogs as they will probably cause some problems for you. In downtown Vancouver, visit the Pacific Centre Mall and Robson Street. Robson Street is filled with shops and is Vancouver's most popular shopping area. Like another poster said, take the skytrain (it's like a monorail) to Metrotown station. This station is attached to Metrotown Mall which is the 2nd largest mall in Canada. You can take some beautiful pictures of the mountains and the water if you go to the waterfront area. In this area, you can find "Jack Poole Plaza" by the convention centre and the Olympic cauldron is located in this plaza. Stanley Park is a really nice park located by the waterfront. If you do bring your dogs, they'd have lots of fun there. From the park, you can take amazing pictures of the city, the Lions Gate Bridge (suspension bridge) and the sunsets at English Bay. Walk the seawall around there with your dogs. Here's a link to everything Vancouver. http://www.tourismvancouver.com/visitors/

I don't know about questions 1-3 (sorry), but for question 4, you should definitely go to Burnaby and go to Metropolis at Metrotown. It's a HUGE shopping mall. :D Answer mine? http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AlPA1dgM30LSxvtbU1pmC07BFQx.;_ylv=3?qid=20100713102124AAWo7XF

1. Check with your airline. #2. Some stores are "pet friendly" others are not. Depends on the store. 3. No. but they need proof of rabies vaccinations. (Read your question again) 4. You've already got that answer.
