The Mrs. has a lot of good insight but I'd like to add some more. CONs - there are a LOT of drugs and unsafe areas in Chilliwack (mainly near the Hospital and Chilliwack proper) and then in Vedder. I've seen people walking around smoking weed in public with cop cars driving by them with the cops talking on their cell phones. - many ignorant people who really aren't into expanding their mind and embracing culture so good like trying to find really artsy things or cultural things to enjoy - the drive across the Sumas flats into Vancouver is very unsafe to drive in the winter with all the blowing snow. This past winter, on one specific 2 day stretch, the police even said don't drive unless you have to and pack chains for your car and rations. RATIONS!! That means they expected you to be in the ditch. - Chilliwack consistently places lower on all the grading systems for schools in the Vancouver / Fraser Valley. - The movie theatres are really sad (dirty, poor sound quality, uncomfortable seating) - Traffic to get from Vedder / Sardis to Chilliwack proper can take anywhere between 15 minutes to 1/2 hr depending on the day - the shopping mall is really lacking in variety for businesses Pros - the Chilliwack Airport boasts a Free FlightFest every year. It's like a small scaled down version of the Abbotsford Airshow but it's still fun for families. - if you're religious there are a lot of churches for a variety of denominations - the Chilliwack Bruins are the local hockey team and I hear they are fun to watch - some good restaurants: Chiles, Dakota's, Jacksons - you're close to Harrison Hot Springs which has a really fun Canada Day parade - Close to Cultus Lake but it gets SO busy with tourists that it can be pretty unsafe to drive, and there is always at least one fatality in Cultus Lake area - housing is less expensive in Chilliwack - there are very little good jobs to be had in Chilliwack, your family will likely end up commuting - the transit system in Chilliwack is wretched. It took me only 35 minutes to rollerblade across town, the same trip by bus took me 55 minutes. That was the last time I took Chilliwack transit.

Well! Let me start by saying that you have your Greater Vancouver Area which basically includes: Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Delta, White Rock, Surrey, Langley, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and Port Moody. For the most part, it gives you a wide variety of job opportunities. Like for example, my family currently resides in Surrey, BC and my husband works primarily in Richmond, BC but also drives all over the Lower Mainland or Greater Vancouver Area. With that said, places like Abbotsford (closer to to Vancouver then Chilliwack) and Chilliwack your looking at one hell of a commute to the city. So for things like entertainment and job opportunities you would be looking at a hike. The majority of the Greater Vancouver Area is interconnected by some form of transit (bus, ferry, sky train) which makes it convenient for anyone trying to get around without a vehicle. With that said its not that there are not job opportunities in Chilliwack or Abbotsford area. Just that your really limiting yourself by living on the very tip of the area. Your looking at a 1hr 30min commute to get to Vancouver, that is not including heavy traffic and back ups. Its approx. Pros - Housing Cost Is Lower - Its A Beautiful Area - Great Location For Summer (Cultus Lake to one side and Harrison Hotsprings to the other - great swimming locations/beach) - Close to some great hiking trails - Slower Paced Environment Cons - Far From The Greater Vancouver Area - Far From A Great Source of Entertainment - Far From A Wide Selection Of Job Opportunities - Not Connected To The Major Transit System of Greater Vancouver Area - Excluded From A Lot of Great Events - Little More Snow Then Closer To The Coast If I were you I would move to either Cloverdale or Langley. In Langley you can find everything you need on 200th St as far as stores/shops go. There are plenty of rec. centers located all around the city to accomodate your 1yr old for things like play groups and what not. Lots of really nice moms/people in the area to associate with. Cloverdale is on the West side of Langley. It is a very nice little town, especially if you can find a place on the north end along the Fraser Highway which has basically everything you need within walking distance. Again, very nice people in the area. I live in Surrey, BC myself. I plan on buying a home in Langley or Cloverdale as they are both great areas for a family. These are just my personal opinions of course. I have two kids myself 18 months and 3yrs. If you need any information on some of the local places to take your kids, beaches, hiking trails, that sort of thing email me. I would be more then happy to help you out.
