How would you compare Canada to the US?

How does Canada compare to the US, in details?

  • i am looking for details, about the people, streets, shops, everything ..

  • Answer:

Canada is much more urbanized than the US. Despite the much smaller (1/10) population, most Canadians live in cities - 85%, or something like that. About 1/4 of Canadians are recent immigrants. The USA is like a melting pot, where people add their culture to the mix. Canada is more like a collage - adding, but still keeping something of what you were. Which is why defining Canadian culture can be tricky! The shops are similar; in fact, many of the chain stores are the same. Canada has a much better banking system, so debit cards etc., are much more widely accepted. In some ways, Canadians are more conservative, but in other ways, much less so. Some of this is due to history - the USA was founded mainly by ardent Protestants, leaving Europe for religious freedom. Calvinistic ideas abound in the USA. Canada was formed originally by Roman Catholics (especially in Quebec), and Anglicans, who are still very Catholic in their thinking. This difference is subtle, and has been watered down over the years, but it has had a definite influence on the culture's of each country. The "Protestant Work Ethic" is very strong in the USA. This makes the US very right wing compared to Canada, which has higher taxes, and a far more developed range of social programs. Americans are much more entrepreneurial in business, etc. Americans are very big on their military. Most Canadians could care less, and the military is very small. However, when pressed, Canadians flock to join, and fight like demons - amongst the best fighters in the world. After the emergency, they go back to their quiet lives. Canadians are much less racist than Americans. Multi-racial marriages (and children) are pretty common, especially in the cities. No-one even remarks on such things in Canada.
