Do I need a special proxy to listen radio stations from Vancouver online while in Toronto?
-
Hey guys, I was wondering if I need an internet proxy of some sort if I were to listen a radio station from Vancouver or Calgary or Edmonton - or maybe Montreal, while I am living in Toronto. I heard that in some countries, many radio stations restrict the use of streaming their radio stations to their country of origin. If I attempt to listen a radio station in the UK, then it would be blocked. However, some Canadian radio stations that provide live streaming online can also restrict worldwide streaming. In simple terms, If I were to listen to a Toronto, Ontario, Canada radio station in London, UK or Paris, France - then it would be blocked. These are the radio stations in Vancouver for example: http://www.am730.ca/ http://vancouver.virginradio.ca/ http://www.qmfm.com/ Do I really need to have a special proxy of some sort if I were to listen to some Canadian radio stations outside of Ontario? How about some stations outside of Canada?

Answer:
You won't need a proxy. No worries there, I tested them all out (I'm in Toronto) and they all worked. Couldn't get the stations to work with Firefox (adobe plugin keeps crashing) but they worked fine with Explorer. As for other stations from outside Canada, it will depend on the station. I listen to the BBC and others with no problems. You'll have to try them out on a station by station basis.

Think about it this way: although some of the advertizing on those stations will be local-specific, much of it applies Canada-wide, you're still a target for national marketing campaigns even if you're in a different city so your streaming actually yields them advertising revenue that exceeds the hosting costs. Most of these radio stations might not actively encourage it, but they certainly don't hate it either. When I moved to Toronto I used to listen to Vancouver radio stations over the net all the time. Mind you, this was years ago when streaming was in its infancy. Another thing: IP coding by province is somewhat unreliable, traffic is directed through least busy pathways regardless of where they are, they can block at the national level but not really at the provincial level.
