Are bonfires illegal in Toronto?

  • One of my friends are holding a bonfire as part of their 16th birthday celebration. We live in Toronto, and are aware that bonfires are legal on beach grounds. Considering, none of us want to build one at a beach, we were wondering which areas also allow bonfires. If beaches are the only possible locations what are the charges for creating illegal bonfires in the GTA?

    According to the City of Toronto bylaw - "While in a park, no person shall: Light, build or stoke an open fire or bonfire unless authorized by permit;" I cannot find reference to the applicable fine, but be assured there would be a hefty one. In addition, you would be responsible for the costs incurred if the fire department is called out to quell the fire, which may very well happen. There are some good safety reasons not to have fires in the city. The buildings are simply too close together and fire risks are higher. In addition, the smoke from fires in the city is a major cause of particulate pollution. If everyone was having campfires, no one would be able to breathe. (see the current issues in Asia with 'black carbon aerosols' from domestic fires.) Enjoy your fire safely and legally at the beach.

Regardless, the fire needs to be used to cook food, so as long as you have hotdogs or marshmallows around, the fire is considered to be used for food. Call you local fire department and ask them what the procedure for campfires are in your area, as long as you are cooking on them.
