Toronto Pearson airport security?

At toronto airport, do you check -in your luggage before or after us preclearance?

  • I am traveling from toronto pearson airport to newark liberty airport and I was wondering if I go through us customs first with my luggage before check-in or after checking in my luggage? And do I go through pre-security screening before or after us customs?

  • Answer:

If you are travelling to the U.S. by air at Toronto Pearson International Airport, you will have to go through U.S. Customs area at Pearson Airport. This is from the GTAA (Greater Toronto Airports Authority, the operator for Toronto Pearson International Airport) website regarding travel to the U.S.: Q: What can I expect at the airport if I am going to the US? A: First you will need to check in. This can be done in person, on-line or via mobile service, depending on your airline. Once you have checked in and been issued a boarding pass, you will need to have your checked baggage weighed by airline staff. Next you will need to fill out your US Customs card and then go through US Customs. This step may be streamlined if you have a NEXUS card. (US Customs opens at 4:30a.m. each morning) Once US Customs has cleared you to travel into the US, you will go through CATSA’s pre-board security screening. Following this secondary screening, you will proceed to the gate area, where the airline will check boarding cards when it is time for your flight to depart. Just want to let you know that EITHER a NEXUS Card OR a VALID passport is required to travel to the U.S.A. by air. If you want to cross the border to the U.S.A. by car, you must use at least ONE of the following - Enhanced Drivers Licence (EDL) - Enhanced Identification Card (EIC) - NEXUS card - Passport I hope this helps.

Other answers

The short answer is: 1. Check in with your airline. They will weigh and tag your luggage, but you have to take it with you. 2. Go through US Customs pre-clearance. You better have your passport with you. You'll still have your bags as you're dealing with the Customs agent. 3. After US Customs, you'll be able to drop off your checked bags (if you have any). 4. Then you go through the normal security screening with just your carry-on items. 5. Finally, go to your gate and get ready to board. The lineups for Customs at Pearson can get pretty bad, so make sure you leave enough time. They say up to 3 hours before your flight!
