What san antonio,tx hospital should I give birth at?

Best way to move from San Francisco to Hamil to kingston, Ontario (3 hours north of Toronto?)?

  • Hi Everybody! Has anybody ever moved cross country? Or from the US to Canada? I am moving from San Francisco to Ontario (north of Toronto) I am attending University in Ontario for vetinary school! I was born in Canada but grew up in the US (California). I don’t remember anything about Canada and have no clue about moving there. I have about five 20 x 24 boxes that I need to ship there. What is the best way to go about moving them cross country? I am also bringing a car. I don’t want to ruin it by putting so many miles on it (used Toyota camry or might be a used pruis) and according to mapquest it will take 45 hours to drive there! Or roughly, 350 in gas cost. Morever, I’m only 22 and my parents (who are helping in part to finance my vet school and lending me their car for two years only) refuse to let me drive it there since Im a small girl and it would take 45 hours of driving and it might not be safe , etc. How would I go about shipping the car? I myself am flying there. Does anybody know about buying car insurance there as well as cell phone? I currently have triple A and also At and T cell phone plan. Quite honestly I am scared to death about going to Canada for professional school. But it’s so much cheaper than American vet schools (by about 10k). I was going to go to an American vet school, but they received my intent to enroll a little bit to late : ( Anybody who has lived in Ontario—can you guys give me any tips? I am Canadian by birth and Also hold American citizenship, but I have NO IDEA what it’s like to live there. I don’t have any friends nor family and the last time my parents were in Canada was 21 years ago! Does anybody know the cost of living in Ontario how it compares to SF Suburbs? If I am sick, can’t I just drive an hours south of the border to upstate New York and go visit the doctor there? I am scared to death : _ ( I have no clue how the Ontario health system works: dental, optometry, and everything else (I have asthma )

  • Answer:

There will be a health clinic on campus, and your tuition fees will include some supplemental health insurance (probably some incomplete coverage for optometry, prescriptions, etc). As well, the university will help you get equivalent-to-government-health-insuranc… for the waiting period and then tell you how to enrol in OHIP. Cell phone - easy, there are lots of good enough choices, several contract carriers such as Bell, Telus, and Rogers as well as pay-as-you-go Virgin and Fido. You may need to licence your car in Ontario and get an Ontario driver's licence, as well as buying car insurance. Be sure that the car is adequately insured for the trip first. The car will need to pass Ontario safety check and possibly the emissions test too. If you and your parents are feeling cautious about you as a driver, you'll probably want to join CAA (like AAA). Guelph is an hour west of Toronto (just off the highway between Toronto and Detroit). Driving two or three hours to see a doctor in Buffalo would be a bad idea if you were ill. Call a moving company to ship your stuff and car - being flexible about pickup and delivery times may mean a cheaper price, since they'll try to fill a truck. Itemise all the stuff in the boxes, since you won't be with it at customs to make the declaration. Shipping a car will be a lot more expensive than driving it, of course. Consider inviting a friend or parent to make the drive with you and then fly home. Or just buy a used car in Canada, especially since your parents seem to be attaching some unreasonable requirements to lending you this one. (I drove across Canada in an old car in the winter when I was 22. My parents just asked that I call home every night. It was a wonderful adventure.) When are you going? I'm guessing it's not this fall, since you don't seem to know that much about it. Another thing to consider is whether you'd be better off to live on or near campus and not operate a car, at least not right away.

Maybe the first thing you should do is verify exactly where you're going. You seem a little vague about where that is. The only vet school I know of, or can find, in Ontario, is at Guelph which is not 3 hours north of Toronto as your post implies. Call moving companies in SF and ask about shipping the boxes. Or call Fedex or UPS, since there are only 5 boxes. The car is more complicated. There are companies that specialize in shipping cars. It's expensive. But since the car will be in Canada for two years, you'd have to get it licenced in Canada. That can be a big hassle, because Canadian safety standards aren't necessarily the same as US one and the car will need inspection and maybe alterations. If this was me, I'd forget taking the car and buy or lease one there. You buy car insurance in Ontario by going to an insurance agent and buying it from them. Don't know if the phone is transferable, probably is , but if you keep your US company, you'll pay long distance every time you make a call. Better to get a plan in Canada when you arrive, It will be cheaper to live in Ontario than in SF, at least housing should be cheaper. Food and gas will be a bit more. Check with the school about medical plans for students, check with whatever insurer you have now about coverage for being out of the country for that long. Going back to the US for medical treatment just isn't realistic. What if you break your arm and can't drive there? Canadian plans don't cover dental, don't cover prescriptions, don't cover vision care, only cover eye exams in certain circumstances, so you pay cash for those unless you have private coverage. Living in Ontario won't be that different from living in the US in many ways, but there will be snow in winter.

Why are you moving to Kingston when the Vetrinary program is in Guelph? That's the onlt program in Ontario.

Health care is WAY better in Canada, don't go to the US to get that slave stuff when you can get the real thing outside your door

Dude, just drive your car to Ontario or sell it. Shipping a car is never worth it.

You can probably ship the boxes by truck. Look in your yellow pages for a company that ships boxes. You would probably be better off leaving the car behind. If you really want one while you're here, buy one here. You could get a used car cheap. We have private car insurance here. You phone an insurance broker (find one in the yellow pages) and they'll find you the best rate. Guelph is a small city, you should be able to get by without a car. We have tons of cell providers. It is a total mess trying to figure out which is "best". I'm thinking next time I'll go with Fido. There's a new one called Mobilicity that sound's good too. Since you are Canadian, you'll qualify for Ontario health insurance if you are establishing residency here. Which, I think you would be. If you aren't considered resident here you would need private health insurance, or maybe you'd be covered by your parent's insurance as a dependent in full time school. Dentist, optometrist are both not included in public health insurance. We pay that ourselves unless we have health insurance that covers them. Most colleges and universities in Ontario have group insurance plans for students, you should check at the University of Guelph student's association web pages for that. You'll love living here, it's a great place to live.Guelph is a beautiful city. You must be very bright and well qualified, not just anyone gets into the veterinary college. You'll be fine.
