Can I get an international license with a G2 license?

Is it possible to get an Ontario driver's (G1/G2) license without owning a car?

  • My family and myself live/work in downtown Toronto (most of our lives) and rely on public transportation - TTC. I am going in to write the G1 soon and need to know whether I should buddy up with someone who is a car-owner in order to practice driving a car before going in for future road tests/examinations. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

You definitely don't need to own a car. You should be taking driving lessons, but the lessons in themselves won't get you enough experience to pass the G2 and the G2-exit driving tests. (It is possible to book a driving-school car to take the tests in, though.) Yes, finding someone who can take you for driving practice is going to be essential. Remember that he or she needs to have been licenced for at least four years. On the other hand, maybe you don't need a driver's license at this stage in your life. It's useful to have the G1 as identification - it's good for five years - but maybe you can hold off on learning to drive until you're living with someone else who has a car, and you're in a place where transit isn't as good as it is in Toronto.

Sure. You can rent a car - there's no requirement to own a car before you get your license. But your best bet is to go to a driving school. They teach you to drive, they provide the car, and they let you use their car for your test.
