Do you have to attend college before a university?

Drop out of university and attend college?

  • I have already finished 3 years of university, but I do not enjoy what i'm doing at all. I am currently almost failing as I have no more motivation for my classes. I would really like to drop out now and apply to a college instead, and get a diploma in Early Childhood Education, or something to that effect. I feel terrible that my parents have been paying for my school and books for the last 3 years, but I just can't go on anymore. I will definitely pay for my college tuition and books, so thats not a problem. Has anyone else dropped out of university to attend college after a few years? Any advice would be great. Also, how should I approach the subject with my parents, I know even before I start talking I will start to cry.

  • Answer:

Why not stay in, finish your degree and become a teacher? They make great money, get every Christmas, March Break, and Summer off and you're a respected member of the community. Plus, you'll be teaching little kids. You can't do that without a degree. ECE work is great, we love our Day Care workers, but they do not share the same benefits as teachers do, nor are they paid as much as teachers are ... but deserve to be! Think about it!

A University degree is useless to get a job, unless you take a "hard science or technical course " A community college program teaches you how to do a specific type of skill that is in demand in the real world. ECE is the bottom rung of both income and advancement possibilities, forget that. Get a teaching degree, instead. I bet that now you would love to have those 3 years back, wouldn't you ? It is OK to admit a mistake, the really bad/stupid thing is to continue to make the SAME mistake, again. As for your Parents, be honest, tell them what you wrote here......Cry, then get on with your life. I'll just point out that some community college courses are one year long, and they lead to work that pays a great deal more, right away, than a teaching degree does. Look into it. Jim b. Toronto.
