Is it any different renewing my mexican passport even though it has expired?

My Toronto Ontario passport expired a few months ago. Any penalties on renewing it?

  • My passport expired back on Feb 11, 2011. I totally forgot about it and just wondering if there is any penalties on not renewing it before the expiry date. I'm in no rush to go anywhere with it either. I'm looking to go to the office to get it renewed and was wondering if there is anything I need to bring photos, documents, fee and so on. Haven't done this in a while and called a few times, but its hard to reach customer service. I get lost on their website sometimes too. If you have any info, please let me know thanks.

  • Answer:

Since your passport hasn't been expired for more than a year you can use the "Simplified Renewal"(that is you don't need a guarantor etc. and don't have to send in your ID etc. ) You will need new photos(you DON'T need any signed photos for a Renewal) but beyond that nothing but the form and your old passport-it has to be returned. The fee for the passport is 87 dollars-see link to the form below... http://www.ppt.gc.ca/form/pdfs/pptc054.pdf

I realize that Toronto is the centre of the universe but I didn't know they issued their own passports. Go figure. Now if it were a Canadian Passport you'd be fine as long as it's less than 12 months since it expired. You could use the short form for renewal. However, since it's a Toronto Ontario passport I really don't know.

The only "penalty" for not renewing quickly is that the form is longer when you renew. I don't think the fee changes though. If you like to have a valid passport on hand, then renew it but if you have no plans to leave the country and you have more forms of ID to use (driver's license, photo health card etc) you probably don't need to bother until you do want to leave the country again.

No penalties. No problems about renewing it. If you aren't planning to go anywhere for a while, you can wait until you do have some travel plans and then get a new passport.
