How do you pay subway fare and enter subway stations in Toronto?

  • I'm new to Toronto and am going to buy a TTC day pass tomorrow as I need to take the subway around to a few places. My question is, how do you use the day pass? Is there some sort of scanner in the subway station entrance that reads your card? Or a turnstile? Or do you just walk onto any train and show your pass if there's someone checking? Also, can I buy a day pass in Union station? Sorry for the noob questions, but this is my first time taking the subway anywhere and I'm new to this city. Please help me out

    an easier way is to get TTC tickets or pay money. there is a small station in the subway where you put in your TTC fare.

you can buy the pass at most stations from the ttc worker in the selling booth by the turnstiles. the only problem with a day pass is that if there is no worker at the station (as in it is all automated), you won't be able to get in. in that case, you can take a bus that goes into a station (as you do not need to pay again going from a bus directly into a station). you don't need to show a pass/transfer when going in and out of the train

You can buy a day pass at the entrance to the Union Station subway. You have to buy it from a TTC worker, which means you may have to line up. After you have the pass, just flash it for the rest of the day at any subway entrance, or as you board a bus or streetcar.
