Is it possible to teach in Ontario without a BEd?
-
This is what is stated on the University of Windsor's website: It is not possible to teach in Ontario's elementary or high schools without a BEd degree. Completion of a Masters in Education degree alone does not make a person eligible to teach in Ontario. Is that true? How can you have a master's in educaiton but not be eligible to teach?!

Answer:
In order to teach in Ontario you need to be accredited by the College of Teachers and your degree would have to be evaluated by them. You may have entered the Masters program without all the qualifications for your BEd. For instance you may have a masters in adult education and that would not qualify you to teach in a school. You can apply to the College to have your degree certify you, but the College of Teachers has the final word. In the BEd you are taught how to teach as well as getting your degree in your course of study. You may also qualify to teach after you have a Bachelors degree and take a year of Teachers College. A graduate of these 2 are automatically given their teaching certification because these courses are certified by the College of teachers.

You don't need to have a BEd to be admitted to an MEd program. An MEd involves a couple of years of coursework and/or research into some aspect of education, such as policy, adult education, or special education. An MEd program doesn't include supervised practicum or directed courses in learning how to be a classroom teacher. Similarly, if you have suitable background in a physical science you can be admitted to a master's program in engineering, but in Canada it would be very difficult for you to then become a professional engineer, because you haven't taken the four years of coursework in engineering fundamentals.

Because the M.Ed requires specialization. You can focus on English, on History, on Math, on Phys Ed and these would all allow you to teach, or you could focus on School Administration, but not be able to teach, because that isn't a teachable subject. It prepares you to be a school principal, but not a teacher.
