What is really like for Blacks in Toronto, Canada?

It's hard to compare because I have no idea how Blacks fare in Europe - but they do well in Canada. Anywhere in Canada. There are more Blacks in Toronto because there is a larger population there - and well educated Blacks take the same jobs as well educated Whites - or any other colours. Canada is pretty much a colour blind country. What some people perceive as covert racism is often times an excuse for weakness in job qualifications. If a person of some other race gets a job ahead of a Black person - there is often a reasons for it. But it's easier to say 'racism' than it is to improve ones qualifications.

The vast majority of blacks in Toronto are educated, hard working people. The small percentage who are criminals paint a bad image. Toronto is one of the safest places in Canada. A small percentage of the black community in Toronto are low class criminals, or their girlfriends, who are having kids like rabbits. The Jamaicans are the ones who perpetuate the "gangsta life style : and are the ones shooting each other, over drugs and stupid insults. They tend to live in public housing yet can afford to drive tricked out 50,000 dollar Cadillac SUVs and dress in the height of slum class clothes. Having said all that....there are SOME educated and hard working blacks in Canada, but they don't get the headlines that the shooters do. The problem lies in the lack of parenting by young female blacks who live on public money and don't work, and have numerous kids by different fathers. Well you read the same post as me you can see anti black racism is extremly prevalent here. It is not the kind of in your face racism you might get from somewhere else, where if someone dislikes blacks you will hear them say it out loud but the subtly mid western central canadian kind of racism where you will be excluded from promotions, hiring, followed around in a store, and always wonder if they are truly being racist or something else is going on. No they are being racist, I;ve lived here most my life. Its not like if your black and work hard you cannot be succesful, but if you want to get anything over someone nonblack its like you have to beat them significantly and work so many times harder or they will just find a lousy excuse to not give it you when it is about race. This is one of the msot racially divided cities in the world. Hiring is based on race, and you will find it rare to see much mixing unless a business is so large they cannot find anyone of their own kind to hire. toronto is a nice place to visit i'd imagine but to live is a different thing. Realize most people here are very anti social and stick to their own social groups. Outside of the downtown core most people never make new friends or talk to strangers, they just stay friends with people from elementary school and thats it. So it is not exactly the easiest place to make new friends. People will be friendly as in common courteous but do not mistake it for friendship. The covert racism is real and very bad. Even the somalians who are the newer set of immigrants recognize it and are worst off than west indians. The problem stems from the fact that west indies are spread out across the economic ladder so none of them all live in the same place therefore it is diffcult for them to unite and denounce the racism they face in the city. there are no black civil leaders or activist who get play in main stream media, no al sharpton or jesse jackson up here. Although discrimination is technically illegal, it is difficult to prove and you can only sue in a special tribunal that does not award more than 40k and that was to someone who was raped by a convicted rapist. In toronto blacks are viewed as like the bottom, everyone assumes your a criminal especially if your male. Mind you people in toronto do not trust anyone and they think it of everyone, but if your black they think it more like your going to steal from them or something. White people cluth their purses in the elevator around you, stuff like that. Most west indians stop coming to Canada because you can have a better life there or in usa. In Canada/toronto, taxes are high and you get about the same amount of services as usa but just a universla healthcare. It wil also be a challenge to get rent because people will assume the worst because your black. Tell me where in europe your from, I use to live there and I'll tell you if its better or worst. I say london is better to be black but not italy.

You sound educated you should be fine...to be honest, I don't care how much thumbs down I will get but most of the black people are uneducated here and those are the ones people hate. They constantly stir up trouble, blast up music and bother neighbours..Im not saying ALL but most do. They are loud mouths from the ghettos.. Now there are MANY polite, educated blacks..but when the bad out number the good you start to stereotype... I have a very good friend who is black, does not involve herself with this idiotic "gangster hood" lifestyle..STAY AWAY from those people..but the majority in Toronto are from the "hood" @whatevs: You're an idiot if you call me prejudice, learn to read I said NOT ALL blacks are like that, in fact my good friend is black. I do not support murder, terrorism or violence. When an ethnic group starts to outnumber the good vs bad, it's naturally to put them in a stereotyping category. You're stupid if you deny the fact that most murders in Toronto are not committed by black men. Look up the definition of prejudice and go learn something.

There are a lot of black people in Canada, almost 1 million now I think, and Toronto has a fair amount. If you want to be with other blacks then Scarborough is the place to be.As for your racism question, White's in Ontario who compose the vast majority of the population have a first impression that's hard to erase. The Jane and Finch Neighborhood is a crime and gang riddled area which contains Bloods, Crips and other gangs. The majority of the population in Jane and Finch is black, so black people receive a negative tone towards them. However I don't think that you are going to join a gang in Canada so I think racism will not come your way, you will just comprise of the majority of the black population in Canada who are good people and make a honest living like the rest of us.
