Quebec and quebec city pronunciation?

  • i have heard there is a different way people pronounce quebec city, so that you don't even need to say city. i know the province is offered pronoucned like ke-beck. so is quebec city then pronounced qweh-beck? or what is it?

    I dont know about in english but in french we dont have to add the word city (which would be translate to Ville de Québec). The distinction come from what you said before. If you said AU Québec, you mean the province, As a general rule, Au is used in front of Country, Provinces or States that are Masculin. (Yes, even those have gender in French...) If you said À Québec, then you mean the city. As a general rule, À will be use only when you refer to cities (à Montréal, à Toronto, à NewYork.) I guess it could sound tricky to a none French ear but it is quite different for us... Hope this helped... I never heard of a way to said it in english without the city before, beside of course that here (in Québec) we obviously do not necessarily use it as it is quite obvious that we already are in the province of Québec... lol

You should pronounce it "Kaybek City", as the name Quebec comes from the native/Algonquin word "Kébec", which means "where the river narrows" and is as close as you can get to the French pronunciation. "Kwebek" is just wrong.

Quebecers tend to say kay beck, which is in fact how it is said in the International phonetic alphabet. I say kwi beck (very short I). Quebec City is the same.

i say it anglo style (like i learned in school) like, qweh-beck. franco people still understand me very well. i can say it like, kee-bec too but i'm not used to saying it like that and i think it sounds ugly lol
