If i spent a month in quebec city, would i have a chance to learn a lot of french?
-
i would think so, but i'm being told that i'd have a better immersion experience in smaller quebec towns, since quebec city apparenty has too much english in it! is this true? i would love to go to quebec city because it seems like a really fun place, but my reason for visiting quebec is to immerse myself in the french language and i don't want to just end up speaking english! merci. :)

Answer:
You will do well and learn a lot if you live in an immersion situation where no English is spoken, such as with a unilingual French family. There is quite a bit of English spoken in Quebec City, and less in smaller towns, so that is certainly a consideration. Your living arrangements will make a great difference. Best of luck with your plans.

I can't answer your question about french but I can relate to it from a spanish perspective. I live about 10 minutes from the US/Mexico border in San Deigo. I am trying to learn spanish and I have learned that it is easier to learn by talking with someone that speaks no english at all. This is because it is very frustrating to a person that speaks both languages to have to wait on you to figure things out. However, if the person speaks no english at all, there is no choice. The Tijuana/San Diego area has the 2nd largest Hispanic population in the world and a lot of Hispanics speak some English. Therefore, the key is not the size of the city you are in but the people you are talking to.

It worked for me. Are you staying with a French speaking family? That'll help a lot. Bon chance!

lol Québec city is 95% french. I've never heard someone speaking english in Québec, except tourists... À mon avis, Québec est un bon choix..

Yes what you heard is correct. Quebec city is half english, or maybe more. Everyone can speak english because it's a tourist town. it's a great place and you need to visit it though. Quebecers are famous for talking english to you even if you try to talk french. If that happens just say "Je veux ameliorer mon francais, et j'aimerai parle en francais" Bonne chance

It worked for Melkiha, huh? Is that why she can't even spell "Bonne chance"?!? LMFAO All things considered, you'd be a lot better off in Quebec City than in Montreal where a lot of folks are bilingual (not everybody though!) and also a lot less bored than if you're stuck in a small town with nothing much to do and no one to talk to! Mind you, one month isn't much time to dedicate to any kind of foreign language immersion program though. Your decision! Let it be a wise one! Best of luck!

Just keep in mind that the French we speak here is Quebec is different that French spoken in France. There is a lot of slang used here. The language also mixed with English a little bit. (the slang mainly) and there are also a few words used here that are not used in Frane. For example, the French in France say 'stop'. The French in Quebec say 'arret'. It's an awesome way to learn a language :) Bonne chance et aye une bonne temps au Quebec!
