Cheapest TV available in Quebec?

How censored is tv in Quebec compared to US?

  • I don't mean like crazy government cover ups. I mean in terms of voilence and such. In the US we are treated like babies and rarely hear profanity in the media, no nudity or hardcore violence. Is this the same in Quebec? I know it isn't as censored in France which is why I ask about Quebec. Are people in Quebec less offended by what might offend an American or are they on par? Are your original radio channels and tv programs just as censored?..

  • Answer:

Here's a telling quote that sums it up in a nutshell: "Generally, U.S. channels edit and censor Canadian series in order to make them look like U.S. productions or to sanitize elements considered too graphic and/or political for particular audiences or the channels’ trademark." And that article is talking about a Canadian show for teens that's popular in the States: Link - http://flowtv.org/2008/12/degrassi%E2%80%99s-always-greener-on-the-other-side-canadian-television-us-handling-%C2%A0nafissa-thompson-spires%C2%A0%C2%A0vanderbilt-university%C2%A0/ As for those Fox News ninnies in that vid somebody linked to, I can only point out that we're the country that rides to the rescue when the USMC gets in over its head: Link - http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2008/06/02/afghanistan-petronzio.html

For American eyes, Quebec TV is pretty shocking! They don't censor much - ever soft core pornography can be seen on Quebec TV. Nudity is no big deal at all. I'm not sure about the language, but, I have certainly heard profanity on TV from Quebec. I am puzzled by your reference to France though. Quebec has nothing to do with France.

Quebec has historically been much more " European " when it comes to broadcasting of things like nudity and sexuality-even compared to the rest of Canada ,let alone the USA. Back in the 1980's a major french-language network ,TQS (now "The V")in Montreal -which is /was available on many Canadian cable networks began broadcasting soft-core porno movies weekly on Saturday nights- a feature called "Bleu Nuit"(literally "Blue night"-as porno movies are sometimes called "blue movies") This featured mostly European movies and later on some Playboy channel stuff overdubbed in french-so I heard ;) This lasted into the 2000's. Quebec TV commonly featured nudity even in it's prime -time drama series -and when movies that had an R rating in the US were shown on these channels chances are the nudity and sexuality would be left in while some of the gore and blood would be edited out of the more violent scenes. If you flick through channels in the wee hours of the morning when all the infomercials are on all the US channels are pitching thing like the Ronco Food Dehydrater or some new miracle cleaning product-when you flick by the Quebec channels they're selling sex toys or showing adds for escort services.
