Eloping in Niagara Falls Canada when you are from the US: Rules:?
-
I'd like to elope this spring (just the two of us) in Niagara Falls. We are US citizens and I've been told two things: #1 We have to get married in NY since we are from the US to make it official and #2 that Niagara Falls--Ontario, Canada allows US citizens to get married and it is considered official in the US. My question is, has any one of you (US citizen) experienced eloping in Ontario, Canada (Niagara Falls)? If so, what was your experience? Where they nice to US citizens? Did you have to fill out extra paperwork before or after to actually make it official?? Where did you go....etc ? Any help on this would be great, thanks!

BEFORE you can get married in the Province of Ontario, You MUST apply for and receive a marriage license. Here is the official Ontario Provincial marriage A Canadian marriage license IS recognised in all parts of the USA. Here is the Ontario Marriage information website. http://www.ontario.ca/en/life_events/married/012199.html As US citizens, in order to enter Canada, as visitors, you will need US passports ( to get BACK into the USA ) and proper insurance on your car ( many US car insurance policies do NOT cover you outside of the USA's territory ). Check with your insurance agent, for the proper " Interprovincial liability coverage slip ". This shows that you have the required "minimum coverage amount " that is requied under Canadian laws. Birth certificates for each of you ( originals not copies ) and proof of your US home addess ( driver's license will do ). Be happy. Jim B Toronto.

You can get married anywhere and it is legal everywhere. So don't worry about that. Just make sure your passports are in order, head on up to Niagara Falls, find a friendly justice of the peace, or the pastor of a church, and have a nice, quiet little wedding. Then when you get home, register your change in status with your bank, your insurance company, your car registration and all the other people who have paper work on you. Best of luck to you.
