Can an American work in Montreal?

Are there ATM machine's in Montreal that work with American banks?

  • I'm from NJ, going to Montreal at the end of the month. I was wondering if I could use my debit card at ATM machines while there.

  • Answer:

Absolutely. As long as your bank's debit card is associated with Interac, you'll be able to use. I use mine cross-border and in Europe all the time. Welcome to Canada.

You should have no problems. My debit card has worked in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and elsewhere across North America. Yours should not be any different. Just take a look on the back of your ATM card and see if it has the "Interac" and/or "PLUS" logos there. If it does, they will work in Montreal. Keep in mind that some banks charge you a pretty hefty fee for using the ATM system of another bank. If you come to Montreal and are facing these fees, one way to reduce the impact is to take out more money less frequently. One withdrawal of $200 is better than four withdrawals of $50 if you are faced with a $2.50 service fee for each withdrawal!

Look on the back of your card. If you see the logo for "PLUS", "VISA", or "Maestro", then you shouldn't have any problems. Keep in mind, however, than your bank may charge fees for withdrawing money internationally, and in a foreign currency.
