Where can I buy figure skates in Montreal?
-
Now that it's getting colder, a lot of people around me are prepping for winter sports - hockey for them, but it reminds me of when I used to figure skate. Unfortunately, I left my skating gear back in Japan, and my parents are reluctant to shell out about $100 just to send it to me. I skated for about eight years - took lessons and everything - so I guess I'm pretty spoiled when it comes to skates. I know that there are some rinks where I can rent, but a) they're far away; and b) I've seen the rental skates back in Japan, and somehow doubt those here are much better. People say that they sell skates at Canadian Tire and other places like that, but I'm looking for a relatively decent pair. I'm looking for a skating supply store, or something like that, and preferably close to where I am because the only real method of transportation I have is walking. (I'd prefer not to get on public transport because I've never tried it before and might end up God-knows-where.) Since I've got nothing with me, I need to buy skates (boots and blades), plus soft and hard guards. I'm a first-year student at McGill and stay in dorm, way up on University Street. Does anyone know a store nearby that sells the stuff I need? Thanks in advance!

Answer:
I bought mine at Canadian Tire, and I love them. You can also try Sports Experts. There is one downtown on Ste-Catherine, and one in Place Alexis-Nihon at Atwater.

Play it again sports are sporting stores that sell new and used skates. I buy and sell my kids skates there every year. You can get a cheap pair for as little as 15$ and any upwards if you want new. And if you don't like them or you eventually want better ones, bring them back and they will buy them for you or exchange them for others. They also sharpen, sell all the accessories etc. http://www.playitagainsports.com/

try sports experts (right on the corner of mansfield and st catherine) or canadian tire, both are on st catherine and totally unrelated, but the metro would be a good place to start with public transit, just always make sure to look up directions on google so that you know where youre going

Look in the yellow pages for sporting goods stores and start phoning. Any place that sells decent hockey skates ought to sell figure skates, and there are going to be stores selling hockey skates in Montreal. There are probably sports equipment swap places too. And why not try Canadian Tire? You never know. However, I suspect that a good pair of figure skates is going to cost more than shipping yours from Japan. And you'll have to try the transit system sometime. If you made it here from Japan, you aren't going to get seriously lost in Montreal.
