Hey, I actually just brought a cat from Winnipeg to Phoenix and had to go through that process. Bringing the cat along is generally pretty easy (50$ fee to take the cat on the plane) and they bring it to you when you get your luggage. The issue is in making sure that your cat is up to date in all of his shots and has had a general workup to make sure it is healthy. While I ended up not needing the papers that i got from my vet that said the cat was healthy as the customs guy want really paying any attention, I had called and was told that I needed a letter from my vet so i would still suggest getting them. As for a sedative, I asked my vet and he advised against it but by all means ask your vet and see what he has to say.

Hi! You need to check with customs. You may get some erroneous info here and will be denied boarding! I did it from Florida to Montreal once with my cat. The cat had to have his rabies shot and a letter from the vet was needed to show proof but I have heard that from Canada to the States, the shot is not necessary . Also the cat goes into cargo reserved for animals in the plane and not all airlines accept animals. You will also have to pay a fee for the animal, I think I had paid around $100 but the fee is different from one airline to the other. Anyways, you had better call or check on U.S. Customs sites to make sure. Good luck.

Definitely check with your vet about a mild sedative. A long plane trip with a screaming cat is no fun for you, the other passengers, or the cat. Contact the airlines directly for rules and regs on transporting animals. You might also want to check with customs, and make sure your cat has the required shots needed to be brought into the country.

as long as the cat has all its shots, the border usually lets it through, and for airlines, it all depends on which one.

For everyone's information, some airlines do allow animals in the cabin with you, and in fact do NOT carry animals in cargo anymore: Westjet for instance. Many airlines, including Air Canada, do not carry animals at all anymore. You'll really have to do your homework on the airlines' websites - they all have their policies listed. A sedative is a must; otherwise it'll be terrified and uncomfortable. Good luck.
