Where can an international student find a good job in Bangkok?

I'm a US student who wants to go to college in Canada (montreal, quebec) would I be able to find a job?

  • If I were to go study in Montreal, would I be able to find a job? Would I be allowed to work because of my foreign status? How easy would it be to find a job for a US student with limited french? Of course, I'll be willing to learn french

  • Answer:

yes, you can work off-campus. but your best bet will be to work on campus. The Universities often hire their international students - you can work for the alumni association, work in the cafeteria, work in a lab, etc. there are a million jobs, none of which require you to speak French. They also tend to be more understanding of your school schedule and will cut you a break during finals (which will be important, especially if you go to McGill) Outside the school, it will be harder to find work, but not impossible. It used to be that int'l students could only work on-campus, but that changed 5 or 6 years ago. You now can work off-campus, BUT you are limited. You can only work here after you've studied here 6 months full-time, and then you have to apply for an off-campus work permit. You can only work a maximum of 20 hrs a week during the school year (see link below for more information). Also, don't let the people above scare you - it is possible to get a job off-campus if you only speak English. Many students from other provinces do just fine. I know many people who only speak English who work in Montreal (in retail, bartending/serving, customer service, office work - I even knew someone who worked as a receptionist and spk no french). Don't expect to find your dream job, but you can find some decent work without French - it's just a lot harder.

International students are very limited in where and how much they can work. If you don't speak good French, you are in any case limited. There are opportunities to improve your French. Have you checked the fees for international students? They are much higher than for the locals, as you will not be subsidised.

Unfortunately that is very unlikely. The same as a Canadian has NO right whatsoever to move to the USA (I mean just move not asking to become an american citizen) foreigner are not normally allowed to work without Govt permission. You may contact the Quebec ministry of immigration to know more.

Legally, you are only allowed a paying job at the school you are attending.

International students are of course governed by various rules and regulations pertaining to their ability to work during and after their degree. A good source of information on this can be found on the website of the International Students Office at Concordia University at http://supportservices.concordia.ca/iso/workingincanada/ In terms of finding employment with a lack of French language skills, your options will be limited, but not completely impossible. Many opportunities in Montreal require only a working knowledge of French as their business might be conducted mainly out of the province. There is no doubt that companies like to see you are trying (not just willing, but actually "trying"), so enrolling in a basic conversational program before hand, and continuing while you are here, will show them you are determined to improve your overall skill set.
