Best way to travel from Montreal to Boston, MA?
-
Hi, I'm planning a trip to Boston, but have relatives in Montreal I'd like to visit. How far is the distance between the 2 locations and what is the best ground travel to get between the two? I'm hoping to find a train, for scenic purposes, if not I'd have no problem settling on flying.

K.M. is wrong. Unfortunately direct train service between Boston and Montreal stopped in the 1970s. To do it by train today you either must leave Boston on the earliest first Amtrak Acela to New York City and transfer there to the Amtrak Montrealer, or else take the slow (but much cheaper) train from Boston to Albany-Rensalaer and switch to the Montrealer there but due to the screwed up schedule you will have to stay overnight in Albany and catch the next day's Montrealer train. And CrAzY BIT has inverted the numbers; it is about 350 miles from Boston to Montreal (actually a little less), not 530. Perhaps CrAzY BIT was thinking kilometres. If you drive and your relatives are in Montreal city or the southeastern suburbs take I-89 all the way thru VT and then QC 133 to QC 35 to QC 10. But if they are in the west Island part of Montreal or the northern or southwestern suburbs get off I-89 at VT 78 to US 2 and cross into QC at Rousses Point, thence to QC 15 to QC 30and 132 and cross the St-Lawrence River on the Mercier Bridge. Both Boston and Montreal are great cities. You will enjoy.

I do not suggest taking the train. The only way to do so is through New York, and the last time I did it, it took 20 hours due to trouble at the border. Boston is only 5-6 hours from Montreal by car (provided you don't hit traffic), and you can frequently find carpool offers on Craiglist and the classifed lists of local universities (try McGill), especially if you're going during a holiday weekend. Otherwise, the Greyhound is also relatively quick (7-8 hours I believe), though less comfortable.

Boston and Montreal are about 310 miles apart and the best way would be by car but then again if you don't have one...Greyhound is the best and the cheapest option.

By Greyhound bus. Takes about 7-8 hours. http://www.greyhound.ca/
