Do they have anything similar in France?

Is Old Montreal in Quebec anything like France?

  • I have been to Old Montreal in Canada and I was wondering if it was similar to France.

  • Answer:

In the sense that the streets are narrow and the buildings are old and brick and many of them have court yards. It was originally settled by people from France who tried to build the type of buildings they knew with the materials they had at hand. In France, I'm sure you will find areas that are much older and more that are newer, but here in Canada you won't find many buildings older than in Old Montreal.

The closest you'll get to France with respect to architecture and culture is Quebec City. It is the only city in North America where the original section has a huge wall around it, just like in Europe.

I doubt it. Remember, Quebec stopped being French before the USA stopped being British. To American cities look like British ones? No.

If you asked me which parts of North America were most similar to France, Old Montreal would be one of the top locations I would list. That said, the similarities are limited. It could almost equally be compared to any older city in Europe, as well as late 19th to early 20th century American cities.

unfortunately not at all. Old Montreal is like some turn of the century older neighbourhood in the USA if you want the feeling of Old France DO go to Quebec city it is amazingly beautiful and definitely french architecture.

Montreal does not, however go to Quebec City, it looks like France, its quite beautiful and is old. Quebec City is surrounded by huge city walls, Quebec City contains many old churches and has lots of restaurants built into old buildings.

Unfortunately no. It's small. In fact I'd go as far to say that Montreal resembles an American city (a downtown core, with sprawling suburbs and expressways) more than a compact European city.
