How To Speak English Fluently Free?

How come People in Montreal can speak English fluently.?

  • They were born in montreal . They speak french at home. They speak french at school. How could they be able to speak english FLUENTLY like ME?

  • Answer:

It's because Montreal is one of the most bilingual cities in the world. I was born and have always lived in Montreal. My parents were both English, and I grew up going to fully bilingual school, where I learned French. Venture outside of Montreal, and you will find plenty of people who speak only French, and there are also certain pockets of Montreal where people only speak English. Montrealers need to be bilingual, because it's a requirement of doing any kind of business in this city. There are certainly some people much more bilingual than others, but in general everyone here is bilingual. If you can't speak English, then you won't be able to communicate with tourists, even other Canadians, and you won't be able to communicate with English Quebecers. If you speak only English, you simply can't get a job. No one will take you.

Because Canada is Bilingual so even though they have French in Quebec almost all the people there learn English as well since it's the second official language.

Well, first of all, not everyone in Montreal speaks French at home. There are people born in Montreal in English speaking families, and in families whose first language isn't French or English. They could easily speak French, English, and Armenian. It's not like as soon as you cross the Quebec border all of a sudden everyone is French and only French. And you see, Canada has been a bilingual country for a long time, so people have learned to speak both languages because they need to for daily business, at work, because they have family members who speak another language, because they have lived in parts of Canada where the other language is spoken. When you see and hear both daily, and if you study one or the other in school, it's entirely possible to be fluent in two languages. There are people who are fluent in four or more languages if they have learned and practised them. People in European countries often know more than two languages since they're exposed to more than one pretty regularly.

They were born in Montreal Many speak English at home Many speak English at school That's how they speak English so fluently. Montreal is a bastion of English in the province of Quebec. Elsewhere in the province, they use French at home, at work, and at school. But Canada is a bilingual country and there are many Quebecois who are fluent in English, just as there are many Canadians from other parts of the country who speak French fluently. C'est ca. And if you were studying Eng;ish in Quebec, you would have been taught to say, "How could they speak English as fluently as I do?"

Montreal is one of those cities were most of the people living there were not born there.

Because we are in Canada and it is the natural 2nd language to learn. AND not all Montrealers are french. Montreal is like the NYC of Canada. It's a very multicultural area and is the city where most ppl immigrated too, especially in the 1800s. I am a Montrealer and a 4th generation English Montrealer. My family is mostly from England and some Ireland, and I think you'll find that's fairly common, especially in the western half of the island.

They most likely either had excellent English lessons in school (private school, or a stellar public), or they grew up in a predominately English area and had many English friends. I went to a French high school, where even the French kids often spoke English to each other. Odd, but it's not unheard of. Just wanted to add a note about JJ's comment of "If you speak only English you can't get a job". Yes, you can. It will be harder to find one, but I know many, many unilingual Anglos with excellent jobs in Montreal where they don't need a word of French. (However, you can't lose by knowing a second language.) :)

A lot of people in Montreal ONLY speak English. I have many friends who barely know French and were born and raised in Montreal. Just because it's in Quebec, it doesn't mean it's 100% French. There are English schools, immersion schools (bilingual) and French schools. All French schools have English classes and all English schools have French classes. Most jobs here require you to be bilingual, and considering English is the lingua franca of the world, most people learn it everywhere. Also, Montreal is home to what is possibly Canada's most known University, McGill. People want to go there and must speak English to do so. Also, a lot of people from around the world come just to go to that school. Soooo ya.... it's not a surprising thing at all...

because montreal is a bilingual city the english mostly live on the west island and there are english schools...My mom was english and my dad is french...I went to english school and did all my after school activities in french and lived in the east end area.....
