Is it safe to travel to Indonesia?

Would if be safe for an 18 yr old american girl to travel to Indonesia alone to meet a best friend there I?

  • met online?? well, i've been to the philippines (aunt's family's there) and so i was thinking next summer of going to philippines then fly to indonesia from there then fly home from there. i have a best friend who is legit who she says she is. i met her online.. and she's like 2 years younger and we really wanna hang out finally. would it be safe?? how can i do this with being sure nothing would happen to me?? i know it can be dangerous for american girls traveling alone..........

    As others have said, you would be safer travelling to indonesia ALONE rather than meeting a stranger from the internet. That said, Indonesia is fairly dirty, undeveloped, and not terribly easy for tourists to get around (well unless you go to bali, where none of that all applies). Many people in the Phillipines speak some english at least, where in Indonesia people mostly dont speak ANY. also it is an extremely large and diverse country, so the safety factory will vary tremendously if you go to say, aceh or Papua instead of somewhere on java or in bali. my advice is to meet a friend in person who speaks some bahasa malayu or indonesia, and/or has been to indonesia. But, if you stick to the touristy areas like jogjakarta or bali, you will probably be fairly safe alone.

It is safe for you to travel to Indonesia. American or not, you'll be welcomed. However i can't say the same for meeting your online friend. I believe that you are very much aware that many online friends ( not all ) are actually up to no good. I am not saying that your friend is such person but be very careful when meeting this friend of yours.

Haley. Don't do it. If you want to meet your friend, go with a group of friends. Then, once you meet your friend and the whole family, you can consider going by yourself in the future. I really do not think going alone is safe. One idea you might follow through with is to try to connect with your Aunt's family in the Philippines. It is possible you might have some cousin, or another relative from the Philippines, who works in Indonesia. Filipinos work all around the world. If you can find someone already in the country that you can trust, you can go and visit them. And when you are with them (your family members already there) you can meet and visit with your online friend. I definitely think going there alone is a bad idea (dangerous for sure). I think you also think it is a bad idea, or you would not have posted this here. Think about that for a bit.
