Will £1000 be enough for a month abroad?

Is US$1000 per month enough to live in Hong Kong or Taiwan?

  • I am thinking about doing an internship in Hong Kong or Taiwan, the jobs are good but they only pay on average US$1000 a month. Is this enough to live on? I will have to pay rent, buy groceries, etc. I am having trouble believing this is enough. Does anyone know? I was told this is what a business graduate would earn in those countries, is this correct?

  • Answer:

US$1000 a month is approx. HK$7800 or NT$32000. For this kind of amount, you need to skimp a little and budget your lifestyle wisely. For rent wise, whoa, this is the most difficult part as rent in Taiwan is high and even higher in Hong Kong. For groceries wise, go to supermarket like Welcome, which is available in both places, is a good place to buy your groceries, as well as markets and provision shops in downtown areas in major parts of both places. Yes, if you are a little bit spendthrift, then this will never be enough. If you can live in budget style lifestyle, then it can be enough, or else, look for other jobs. As for biz graduate, if they just come out of their schools right after graduate, yes, most probably is that rate. But it can't sustain for long as this wage is relatively low if you want to stay moderately for long, thats why they always want to promote or find a higher position, eg. manager or even much higher than this. Hope my answer help you and do think twice before making any final decision on it.
