What is the peace corp like?

What should I give my friend who is going away to fiji for the peace corp?

  • My friend is leaving for the peace corp next month and I am trying to figure out what to get her as a going away present. I know she is concerned about the weight and packing restraints so I want to make it something practical yet nice. What do you think?

  • Answer:

It's very nice of you to want to give your friend a useful gift. I would do a gift basket of things she can use in Fiji - Here are some of the things you could put in it: sunscreen and insect repellent (I like to take Coppertone Bug-n-Sun to Fiji since it saves time having the insect repellent and sunscreen applied together), a sarong (they call them sulus in Fiji), a mosquito net for above her bed if they don't already have them where she'll be staying, a traveling medical kit (cold remedies, antibacterial ointment, Immodium, Pepto-Bismol tablets, band-aids, etc.) as those things aren't easily found in Fiji - especially out of Nadi and Suva, Teva-type sandals that can be worn in water, etc. Or if you don't want to spend that much, just give her one or two of these things as any of these ideas would be very useful in Fiji.

Eagle Creek packing cubes. They are awesome to help you limit the space your stuff takes up in your bag. You can find them at REI's and places like "the Container Store" if you have one of those. Deet based bug repellant may be good too. Haha. It's really expensive over there, if you can even find it.

you could send her off with a survival pack of a few magazines if shes into that. or her fave choc bars? these are very hard to come by in fiji and are pretty expensive. or maybe just give her a nice necklace? im sure she would be prepared with practical stuff if she is going away with the peace corp. though... i wonder why that has been arranged? anyone who knows fiji knows that they are definately not in need of international intervention, and have zero civil unrest.......

The Swiss Army knife they call "The Camper" would be my choice. It doesn't have all the blades in the world, but every blade it has is useful and it fits in your hand easily. While she is gone you can send her small things. My daughter is a PCV in Peru. She appreciates letters with pictures of the family - regular ones, on paper, with stamps. Also paper-back novels in English. When I was a PCV many years ago my grandmother sent me the "Peanuts" comic strips every week. It was a blessing and a delight.
