Answer:
Agree with Morgan. Kl is a modern city with a rule of law that does not exist in Thailand. The hospitals generally have British or Commonwealth trained doctors who speak good English and render medical services at fair prices. The same cannot be said for Thailand. In Thailand, there may be problems with crime and scams that the Thai police will not investigate or help with. I have not been to India so cannot comment on those two cities. As for Jakarta, I have not been there either but have been to Bali several times and liked it very much. Bali is different than much of Indonesia proper because the people are generally of the Hindu religion. Edit: On the message boards, you need to be aware that some people have a grudge against a country and may be giving biased information. So I urge you to read the U.S. Counselor information site for unbiased info in Malasia and your other coutries of interest. Here is what they say about crime in Malaysia: "CRIME: Violent crime involving tourists and expatriates in Malaysia is relatively rare. Petty theft, particularly purse snatching and pick-pocketing, and residential burglaries are the most common crimes committed against foreigners. Other types of non-violent criminal activity include credit card fraud and automobile theft. In tourist areas such as Bukit Bintang, Petaling Street (Chinatown) and Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, and the main square in Malacca, the police have established small "Tourist Police” stations familiar with helping visitors to Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur is quite a populated and popular city, the way of life of the locals is decent, not too much poverty and corruption in the city, very tourist/foreigner friendly. I recon that's your best bet :)

I suggest u do a study on the said countries on their political stability.

Hi Angelique, First, it's difficult to commend which or where is a safer or better place for your daughter to study. You have not point out her age or is she going for private school/universities. Is she easy in adapting new environment, homely or daring type. All this makes the difference. I can definitely tell you that Morgan and Miao Tsetung are not giving you the right information about Malaysia, I stayed there for three years and had to leave because I won't want my family to be the next victim. I have many relatives in KL and not one single person have not experience being rob. Malaysia is one of the worst corrupted country in the world. There are areas that are not advisable to visit or stay. For the last ten years, the security of living had deteriorated so badly that locals are worried to even walk on quite street on a bright sunny day alone. People are rob at knife point, at home or outside their house. Old folks with necklace around their necks are snatch by motorcyclist and push to the ground early in the morning at residential housing estate. When you visit the police station to lodge a report they will not even bother and sometimes they tell you not to border to report if you are not hurt. They brought in too many foreign labors from Indonesia not being racist but these are the people and now more and more local Indians who are junkies out to rob with long knives on bikes and some black African work as professional killers. The latest news are the Iranian man and women bring in drugs and making them there. You can also forgets about Indonesia, not too safe for foreigners ..I won't be able to commend on India and Thailand because I was just a tourist. If you really consider putting your daughter in Malaysia, more advisable to let her stay in the school/university campus and warn her of the do and don't. Sorry, being lengthy. @ if you like me to find out more for you, you can give me details about the program, like who are the organizer, how long is the program and which part of KL town she is staying in. Just drop me a mail through my avatar. I am most happy to help because I know how is like being a parent. The safety of our child is the most important.

I would say Thailand. Thai hospitality is world renown around the world. All the crap about the politcal coups and stuff going on isn't really as bad as it seems. Thailand is also really safe, low crime rates since crime is frowned upon the Buddhist culture there. I go there every year too to study during the summer and have never encountered any problems. Thai families are very nice and accommodating, plus Thailand is also an excellent country to travel in, lots of activities to do. I hope this helps!

If you choose indonesia, I suggest your daughter should go to surabaya instead of jakarta (I never been to medan). Surabaya is just as modern as a city as Jakarta, but much safer, and without the satanic traffic jam Jakarta vs KL, both are global modern city, but Jakarta is much bigger, much more chaotic, slightly more dirty, but at the same time jakarta is much more vibrant for tourist/travellers.

I think its hard to answer which country is better, it depends on the institution, subject study, etc. But for safer place, I would say all those country you mentioned are safe. And I think your daughter should learn or lil research about all those cities and country, she should know the characteristic of the country and cities, the peoples, the living space or environment, etc. Then your daughter can choose a place based on what she like. Its gonna be fun if study from self interest.
