I'd been in most countries in South East Asia. My worst experience is in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia when I was robbed few meters away from a police station. I am Canadian.

I'm American, and I have not been to any of those nations. I would say that the worst tourist destinations would be East Timor, because it's still not very stable and there is not much there. Unfortunately, Myanmar does not have an appealing government, but it actually offers some great tourist destinations! Singapore is also sort of a bad place for tourists who want to experience a lot of culture, because this nation is also a city.

I've been to all of the above apart from Laos and East Timor. My worst holiday experience was Manila, Philippines simply because there is very little for tourists to do there, followed by Brunei for the same reason.

I've been to the Philippines and I love it there. But what I've been hearing on the news, Myanmar is one hot spot I'd want to avoid.

Given the current unrest in Myanmar (Burma), it wins the worst place title hands down! I live in Viet Nam, I have been to Lao several times, and Cambodia twice - both countries within the last 18 months - not bad. Been to Thailand several times over the years - not bad. Was in Indonesia a few years back, not bad, but things may have changed with Muslim fundamentalism's surge, thanks to bushi*. I am American. I would go to any of the countries listed, except for Myanmar - at the moment. Oh, and I love living in Viet Nam! .

I am American. I haven't been to any of those countries, but there is definitely a lot of hearsay out there. Myanmar clearly gets the worst publicity, by far. Indonesia has been causing problems for East Timor for a very long time, and it's only been recently that East Timor has become independent from the clutches of Indonesia, and I've heard that East Timor still has scars from the strife in evidence. Laos is quite underdeveloped, and I've heard that only the royalty and their pampered guests get to really enjoy life in Brunei. I once had a brother-in-law (his nationality was Japanese) who absolutely did not enjoy his experiences on a business trip to Malaysia. On the one hand, you've got the seedier side of life in Kuala Lumpur, as one person here already alluded to, and on the other hand, my former brother-in-law also felt very much hemmed in by the pervasive Muslim influence, which meant there wasn't much interesting available for him to do when he wanted to unwind after a long day of work. Muslim terrorist activities in the Philippines are mostly relegated to the island of Davao, but otherwise I've heard great things about the Philippines. Muslim terrorist acts can also mar a person's stay in Indonesia, as Bali, in particular, has been a past target. There was uproar in America a couple of times when American tourists were found guilty of misdemeanors in Singapore, and some thought the sentences were harsh. Though Vietnam is open for tourism, there are many Americans who won't visit there just on principle. I've heard that only famous tourist attractions, like Angkor Wat, have been modernized for tourists, but that most of the remainder of Cambodia has been grossly neglected. Except for the tsunami at the end of 2005, and it's aftermath, as well as sex tourism that exploits children, I've heard only good things from those who've visited Thailand.
