What do Vietnamese people think of natural burial?

  • Answer:

The Viet burials could be considered at least in part a natural burial in accordance to your Wikipedia definition. That in mind, I don't think the Viet would have a strong opinion on natural burials. However, they would have a strong opinion on memorializing their ancestors. The Vietnamese can have a variety of burial rituals and preferences depending on where you're at in the country. Most Vietnamese are Buddhist, but they usually bury their deceased instead of cremation (cremation is more traditional to Buddhists). The typical Viet burial ceremony can be rather lengthy. The body is usually not embalmed but washed with heavily scented lotions and dressed in their finest clothes. The body is placed in an elaborate wood casket. The viewing can last days or even a couple weeks. Afterwards, the casket is stuffed with reeds, branches, paper and other items to keep the body in place while it decomposes. The casket is buried during an elaborate ceremony in an earthen mound. The body will lie for up to three years and then exhumed. The bones are washed, placed into a smaller casket and either reburied or entombed. The body and casket would naturally decompose if the smaller casket is reburied in earth; however many if not most are entombed above ground in a concrete sarcophagus.
