What does an office representative do?

How do my friend register a representative office in Thailand?

  • My friend works for an INGO, head office is in the USA. He wants to open a regional office in Thailand. How to open a new business (representative office) in Thailand? Please tell me the registration policies and procedures. P.S. He plans to hire 5 employees (foreigners and Thais)-he does not plan to do any social service work in Thailand. He just wants to open an office in Thailand because Thailand is the heart of SE Asia. Therefore, the officers from other countries can come to Thailand office for meetings, seminars, etc. Thank you very much.

If his rep office isn't going to do any 'actions' legally, just rent a space, put up a sign and declare the rep office open. Only when the office wants to perform legal commitment then, you need to register, and hence lawyers required to register at the department of business registration, commerce ministry.

Be aware you need a minimum of 4 Thai staff for each farang. That is a bare bone minimum! Expect a lot of problems to go for such a low ratio. More common is 8 to 12 Thai staff for each farang.

He or she should be seeing a lawyer and not having you ask question here about a matter that has a lot of legal ramifications to it.
