Can you stay in Thailand with 2 passports?

Tourist Visa to Thailand stamped for my full stay in Thailand ?

  • I am an Indian citizen and I am visiting Thailand from 6th April to 3rd June 2009. Thinking that I will be allowed only 30 days stay permit at a time in Thailand, I applied for a double entry visa so that I could do a visa run to Cambodia. But to my utter surprise, the visa officer stamped my passport allowing me stay up to 4th June 2009. I am now confused about this stamping of visa. 1) Is it now possible for me to stay in Thailand up to 3rd June continuously without having a visa run? 2) Suppose if wrong stamping has been done by the immigration officer at the airport, will I be detained at the time of departure? 3) How much I can be held responsible for he act of omission by the immigration officer.? My purpose is to avoid the visa run and utilize the second entry for visiting Thailand once more before expiry of validity period of visa which in my case is 2nd July.

  • Answer:

The date for the end of your visa is just guidance for immigration officers at the airport. It's the immigration officer who decides how long you can stay in Thailand. And he or she stamps that date on your visa in your passport, when you enter Thailand. To avoid any misunderstanding you should show your Thai visa to the immigration officer when you enter Thailand. Or else he might think that you have no visa and give you a 30-day stay only. The immigration law for visa runs has been changed recently in Thailand. They will give you only a two-week extension if you go to a land border. But if you go to another country and fly back to a Thai airport, then you will get a 30-day extension. And overstaying your permission to stay in Thailand even by one day is a bad idea. Because Thai hotels are required to report to the police tourists who overstay their visas. And if you get arrested by the police at the hotel. Then not only will you spend a few days in a very unpleasant jail. You will also be deported and probably not allowed to come to Thailand again. On the other hand, if you manage to evade the regular police and come to the airport with an expired visa. Then all you'll have to do is pay a fine 500B for every day of your overstay. And that will be the end of it.

I know someone who had been in and out of Thailand many many times and they spoke thai. On one occasion immigration made a mistake and gave them too long. When they next left the Country the perspective of the immigration officer was Yes a mistake was made, BUT, you knew the rules and knew it was an error, so despite the mistake the law about length of stay still applies. He had to pay a fine. As others suggest you might want to go down to the immigration office to confirm you are able to stay

You should go to Thai immigrations office and ask them. It should be only 30 days, but if they did stamp it wrong then just ask for an extenstion of the tourist visa for another 30 days for a cost of 1,000 baht. You really didn't need two tourist visa. Andy I assume you are from India based on other questions you have asked. If this is true then KhunB is wrong. Thailand has different rules for different countries. A tourist visa for someone from India is 30 days not 60.

Andy, It sounds to me like you may have a double entry tourist visa for 2 times 60 days. There are many different tourist visas. I have had single entry 60 days, double entry 60 days, triple entry 60 days. You may want to take a look at your visa again. If I am correct and you have a double entry 60 days, that will give you a total of 180 days. You can apply for an extension of 30 days for each entry at a local immigration in Thailand. It sounds like you are already in Thailand. I would go to the local immigration if they accidentally gave you 30 days too many but I also think that it is up to the immigration officer when you enter how much he grants you no matter what the visa says. Would be interesting to find out what happened to you. Good luck!
