Is it safe to travel to krabi - thailand?
-
We leave London (UK) on the 21/05/10 and arrive in KL (Malaysia) the following day 22/05/10. We then fly out of KL to Krabi (Thailand) on the 25/05/10 and arrive on the same day. We then fly back out on the 03/06/10 from Krabi to KL. Finally we fly back to London from KL on the 05/06/10. I want to know whether it is safe for us to travel to Krabi during these difficult times with the protests going on? We will not go anywhere near Bangkok and are only looking to stay south and travel to Phi Phi Islands, Ao Nang, etc. I have kept on checking the FOC website http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/asia-oceania/thailand They state the below: "This advice has been reviewed and reissued with an amendment to the Summary (you should be aware that acts of violence or sabotage might be staged outside the red shirt protest area). The overall level of the advice has not changed; we advise against all travel to specific parts of Thailand. We advise against all but essential travel to other specific parts of Thailand, including Bangkok." They did not mention anything about travelling to Krabi. Will it be safe for us to travel? Any advise greatly appreciated.

I think it would be safer for you to extend your vacation in Malaysia, there is so much to see and do there. Going to Thailand at the moment carries a high element of risk. I think, if I were you, I would follow the advice being given by the Foreign Office. You certainly don't want to become embroiled in riots that can spread, without notice. You still have enough time to get your Travel Agent to revise your itinerary.

You will have no problems in Ao Nang, Krabi. All the problems are in Bangkok and you are flying in and out from KL You will not find any Red Shirts in Krabi. Enjoy your stay in one of the most Beautiful scenic parts of the World.

Answering on behalf of BKKian living in Thailand, it's saved for you to travel to Krabi. Since you will not be in BKK at all. Actually even if you're in BKK but not in the city, you'll still be fine. Like me, I'm staying around 15min from BKK airport - nothing around here. I can still go to Central Bangna department store - this is also a big department store chain in BKK. If you go to Krabi now, you may even get more discount - should you buy anything or souvenir. The beaches & islands there are also "extremely" beautiful. It's a "must not" miss experience once in yr life time. Enjoy your trip :)
