Has anybody studied in Thailand? Or moved there from the west?
-
I am thinking of studying abroad in Thailand next year I was looking for some insight. I would be studying at Rangsit University. I am not so worried about the University ranking as I have been assured by my schools they will accept credits from there. However, some details about the location and lifestyle in that area would be nice. I want to be challenged from the experience and I initially picked Thailand because it seems very different from the U.S. I am however looking at Europe as a possible destination but don't see it as much of challenge or new experience as Asia would be. I guess my main question is, have you studied abroad in Thailand? Does anybody know any details about life around Rangist University? I have read some travel blogs of students who studied there and heard nothing but great things. I am just looking for some more info and advice? Also I am Black, and while I don't think it would be a particular issue I was wondering if I would be viewed differently? I've heard lighter skin is considered more beautiful in Asia and if I go I want to make Thai friends. Thanks to all who took the time to read my question and any advice or info is appreciated.

Hi - - Just a couple of comments from an expat - been here a while. Other than the language being quite different from a European romance language, I am not sure how "challenging" it might be if we are talking abt a difficulty factor. Thailand is an extremely easy place to function. Abt the new experience element, absolutely - - and it will be a kick. The culture is quite different. Keep your eyes open and you might learn ways that will be with you for the rest of your life. I could go into a lot of detail here, but would need a book to do it. As to being Black - I can only guess. From what I see, Thai judge a person first by the "quality" and friendliness of your smile - [ not your teeth, but it comes from your heart ] - smile first, smile often and you will undoubtedly make friends here. You will be treated by most as an individual and just like every place else - well, the ones who don't. thats their problem. I did have one black friend from USA visit and I don't remember him having any issues at all. He loved it here. The subject of him being black never came up?? My Thai family does not seem to hold any prejudice in that way - Rangsit is on the edge of Bkk and will have that big city feel to it - - come, enjoy & you will learn more than just your curriculum.

No offence mate but thais don't particularly like black people..not out of Bangkok or Pattaya areas anyway or you're Tiger Woods...So if you don't stray far shouldn't be a problem...I'm not talking open hostility here but a heavy kind of atmosphere
