    malls are more expensive and less crowded. Safety- getting ripped off with poor quality products, it could happen, but not likely. The Thai copies of name brands are good quality for the price you pay. These vendors at the wholesale markets rely on a LOT of repeat business and ripping you off would not be in their best interest. as for pickpockets, they are more likely to be at the tourist markets at Patpong, Chatuchak, and San Luum Night Plaza. There is a difference between the wholesale markets here and the tourist traps that you often read about, make sure you know where you are going before you go.

The wholesale markets are cheaper, but you will not find name brands other then fakes, and quality may not be the same. But not sure what you mean by safety? If you mean pickpockets, yes in large cowarded areas you need to kept an eye on your mobile phone, wallet or purse.
