In the South, I recommend going to Krabi or Khao Lak instead of Phuket if you want to get away from masses of people and overtourism, but since you like shopping Phuket might be the place for you. Phi Phi island has some amazing huts to live in off the beaten path. You might consider getting out to the Similan islands as well. Head north to Chiang Mai for the best elephant treks through the jungle. Go to Kanchanaburi to play with some tigers. There's a lot going on in Thailand as far as politics now so make sure you follow the news at www.thethaireport.com
