Does Mahabalipuram have decent hotels?

2 weeks trip from london to Thailand - how to get there for cheap and how to book decent hotels?

  • Hi, I have asked a few questions but still a bit confused and help would be appreciated! Am gonig with my boyfriend for 2 wks (flying out 26th Jan 2008) thinking of going to Bangkok for 3 nights (shopping/temples etc) Bangkok to Koh-Sumi (5 nights) Koh-Sumi to Krabi (thinking of then going Ao-nang and Ralyleigh) Krabi to Bangkok Bangkok to London. However I have no idea how much the flights should be or hotels and am getting very confused as I have heard Thailand is cheap and hoping to get decent hotel for 50GBP per hotel for 2 people in Ao-Nang and Krabi or should it be cheaper for 5*?? any help regarding hotels and flights for all would be appreciated. Can you go from Koh Sumi to Krabi? by flight or boat or any other method?

It is difficult to answer since I do not know what you expect from a hotel. There is no real system of stars in Thailand. You can get a very good top hotel for around 2000 to 4000 THB in smaller towns. In Bangkok for a good hotel, e.g. Sofitel you wil pay according to the location between 3000 and 3800 TH per night per room. If you book a Sofitel in Krabi, you will pay up to 7500THB per day for a room with an ocean view depending on the day of the week. It is no problem to find a decent hotel room in Bangkok for around 1200 to 1800 THB and much cheaper even. All hotels I have been in in Thailand above 500 THB are clean. There are many sites, I give you two in the source box. Just check in Google for: hotels Thailand. I do not guarantee any of these sites. Whether you book online, in a travel agency or at the hotel desk, check that the price includes all taxes and everything you expect (e.g. breakfast) Basically in Thailand the rate is per room. But since it is a very neoliberal country that abhors regulations, there is a tendency to charge a little bit extra for 2 people per room. Do not forget that Thailand is a country that does not have so much rules as most European countries that protect consumers' rights and your safety. You will soon find out. Flights are nearly always cheaper at the place where you fly from. But why save on the tickets if you are ready to spent 3500 THB a night on a hotel room. I have flown from London to Bangkok very cheap with Quantas and with British Airways. Koh Samui to Krabi: you will find out in any travel agency in Thailand. I go for my holidays to Thailand 30 years and have been a few times on a ferry. Thai people do not have much awareness of safety. Most of the ferries are overloaded and there is usually not enough safety equipment. I never take ferries anymore in Thailand nor in most Asian countries. Take it easy in Thailand, be careful with people who approach you. Most of the Thai are friendly and welcoming people. Unfortunately tourists often attract people with bad intentions. Many of them are farangs (white people). If it is too good to be true it usually is not. You might like to read about the jewelry scam in wikipedia (scams). Try to learn a few words in Thai. You will never be able to pronounce them correctly. Thai love it! Have a nice day.

you need to shop around but EVA air fly from Heathrow and are direct to BKK. The others Emirates, qatar or Etihad fly from London or MAnchester. They might be cheaper but have a stop over always. Your packing a lot of sites into your 2 weeks. This work be more expensive to get transfers and cheaper hotel deals, depends what you want to do. You might be better to book your start and finish in BKK. WE use Siam Palace Hotel as a good, comfortable 3* venue and much cheaper than £50 for 2 people. It is close to the skytrain and central to BKK. You might find it is cheaper to get good hotels and transfers when you are already in BKK. Exchange your money at BKK dont change it in the UK, it will be cheaper at the airport. Use the meter taxis and dont let them tell you the meter is not working. I have a hoilday guuide in Phuket will get you a good deal, if you decide to go there. 400bht per night for a double room at the Merlin hotel. You can get ferries and travelling by bus is a good way to meet the locals. Have fun!!

For your flights within Thailand, you can check out the websites of thai air, one two go, bangkok air, and air asia. For your hotels, GBP50 a day is too much. You can get basic hotels for GBP18 or less. Try starasiatravel.com. There are hostels for 500-700 baht a day but I havent tried one. For Bangkok, you can try four seasons international house. nothing fancy but it is clean. The daily rate is just about GBP14 per room twin sharing with buffet breakfast. It is located very near the wholesale clothing market. I have several friends who have tried that hotel. Just please look for their website.
