Are there good shows in bangkok?

What is the best area to stay in bangkok for typical tourists?

  • hi, we're wondering which is the best area/district to stay in bangkok for a family of 4 for visiting typical tourist sites (eg: Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, river, shopping, Chinatown, shows etc...) Like what is the 'usual' or 'main' district/area to stay in where most tourists stay? We are a family of 4 (2 adults, one teenager, one child) and don't want to much hassle to get to places. For example like in HK, the 'main' areas would be Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, Wan Chai etc... or in Shanghai would be the Bund area, Nanjing Rd area, People's Sq area etc... So for Bangkok, what is the best area? also good hotel recommendations/tourist attractions would be great! thanks!

  • Answer:

Nearly all of the tourist sites you listed are either on the bank of Chao Praya River or can be conveniently reached by a ferry boat or both by boat and walking. So stay at a hotel on the eastern bank of Chao Praya River. Staying on the eastern bank or Bangkok side of the city means you can get to other shopping and entertainment areas of Bangkok easily. In addition, to travel in Bangkok you either need BRT skytrain and MRT subway services. One hotel that seems to have the best benefits of both worlds is Shangri-la Hotel. It's on the southernmost attractions stretch of Chao Phraya, and it's the nearest hotel to Taksin BRT skytrain station. If the rates at the hotel are not beyond your budget it is probably the best option. The hotel has free shuttle boat service to nearby piers but you need to use Chao Praya Express Boat service to visit tourist sites along the river. Buy a one-day pass would save you money. If you prefer other hotels try move up north along the eastern bank for a hotel you like. Google for tourist attractions/hotel map along Chao Phraya River.

Best deals are to be had with agoda.com or latestays.com - there are good discounts to be had. Likely you should stay somewhere along the skytrain line - I cannot offer hotel recommendations w/o a price range. Enjoy your stay.

The area where all the major attractions are as you discribe them such as The Royal palace, the Whats and the river would be the Old City with Kao San road. For a family one of the hotels on the river would probably be better. Then you are also close to the main attractions and China Town. Check out Agoda, they have the best deals for hotels.
