Phuket: shocking story. What are your thoughts?

What do you think of this story and the way the locals acted? From the Phuket Gazette... PHUKET: An unconscious woman was found yesterday morning on a Phuket roadside, naked from the waist down with blood pouring from her head. The 58-year-old, whose name is undisclosed, may have been raped, Thalang Police Lt Col Weerayut Sittirattanakul said. At about 5am yesterday morning, Thalang Police received a report of a woman lying unconscious near a parked motorbike on the side of Srisoonthorn Road, about 3km west of the Heroines’ Monument. Local residents said they had earlier heard an “accident” and came out to see what had happened, Lt Col Weerayut said. “They saw one man lying unconscious on the side of the road. Another man, who [witnesses said] seemed to be drunk, was fighting with the woman. The witnesses then went back into their houses,” he said. “Later they found her lying unconscious and called the police.” The two men were more than 30 years old, witnesses said. The woman had a deep wound to her right eyebrow and bruising between her chest and stomach. “It’s not clear whether she got these wounds from a motorbike accident or if someone hit her with a blunt object,” Lt Col Weerayut said. Police will await a doctor’s report to see if the victim had also been raped, he added. The woman may have had an accident with another motorbike and then got into a fight or was robbed, Lt Col Weerayut said. The woman lived in nearby Bang Jo and went to the Tha Reua Market via Srisoonthorn Road everyday, Lt Col Weerayut said. “This stretch of road is quite curvy and there are always accidents and robberies here, so we plan to put a police box in the area,” he said. =========== The fact that the locals heard an accident went out looked and left the scene to do nothing is a shame. What wrong with people these days? Have you had experiences like this in Thailand?

Answer:
As i have stated in other posts, this is becoming a daily occurrence in Phuket and you only have to check the online Phuket news papers to see how common these attacks are becoming. The problem with people turning the blind eye, is they could have been afraid of the mafia and the fact that the police don't investigate anything properly and they probably didn't want to get involved in this for fear of what might happen to them. There was another sickening story about a woman who was trying to sell fruit from a mobile vendor at Surin Beach and some shop owners told her not to come back, but she did, so the owners of the shop beat her unconscious and then grabbed all of her belongings and dumped them in the ocean in broad daylight, in front of all the tourists who were laying on the deck chairs on Surin Beach. You will soon find my answer in the hidden section, as it seems that there are quiet a few people here who don't like to except the truth and pretend that these things are not happening.

The witnesses going back inside their respective houses after witnessing this terrible assault is quite normal behavior for Thailand, whether the attackers were Issan Thai or Burmese or Laotian is open for debate just now but what people need to understand that the land of the eternal smiles is indeed a very dangerous place and is ranked by most insurers as one of the top places in the world for tourists to to be robbed, killed or injured. I myself have been threatened with a rifle on one occasion and with physical violence by a group of kick boxers on two separate occasions, on all occasions it was my money and my passport they after, I gave no resistance as is best in these situations and my assailants took what they wanted leaving me unharmed but shaken. Thailand has become a very dangerous place for tourists over the last 15 years, people should go there with open eyes.

Shocking story, yes, but maybe the locals didnt know what to do, or were frightened and fled. Nothing is wrong with them, and you may be insulting the Thais, so please watch your language.

You are in a foreign land and although it is often called The land of Smiles, there are indeed many bad-hats in Thailand. Do not attempt a fight if provoked even you are very angry. This is their land. My advice : Keep cool and walk away.

Many many sketchy details here - - Sure, violence is bad anywhere - last time I was in USA, some guy went berserk and killed 4 people - it was big national news - the next day a guy killed 3 people in a city near where I was staying and it was barely on the news. I have seen stats that say crime is down. It is hard to imagine. A long time ago, I lived on an Italian neighborhood street. I was told that whatever I saw, just walk away from it - - even if it is 4 guys beating 1 - - you don't know what that one did. So, w/o the details - it is tough to give an opinion. Maybe this lady was known to cause troubles in the area - - I don't know. Sometimes life/people are not so nice - - its everywhere.
