well ih ave lived her for about ten years now.......if u can speak minimal thai, then they think you live here, and they think you know the price. even my thai friends haggle. walk in like you own the place and say: (women say ka at the end of every sentence, men say kup or krup) tow rai ka/kup? How much does this cost? Low die mai ka/kup? Will you lower the price? Pang. That means expensive. Mai Pang. That means not expensive. learn your numbers, once they think that you can speak some thai they are most likely going to respond in thai.....but if you don't understand numbers, then they'll write it down or say it english. and another way to avoid being over priced is shop outside the tourist area....

This question is like deva ju, exactly same thing was asked some weeks back, exactly the same wording. Wonder what is the connection here? From the shop keeper's point of view, he will want to make maximum profits if he can. If there are people who do not know the market price and is willing to pay a lot more, of course he will not complain. Usually these gullible buyers are the tourists and after having bought things and finding the same items much cheaper elsewhere, they complain that they had been ripped off etc etc. Which brings back to the first sale. They paid the price willingly in the first place so why complain later? Do they not realise that they are just paying to learn to check the market price the next time? Usually for the shopkeeper, they will raise the opening price, maybe 60-100% above their cost price so they have a margin to make in the final sale. Sometimes they will jokingly open the price very much higher if they see a tourist, and if the tourist is willing to buy at their ridiculous price, of course they will be very happy. They can close their business for the day earlier. So usually as in typical Asian fashion, they allow the buyer to bargain down the price till both are agreeable and make the final sale. So both sides should be happy. Some sellers are eager to please customers and may even open price close to their cost, and of course will be disappointed that some visitors still want to bargain! Of course they will be upset. So usually prior knowledge of the market price of items tosell and buy will be good so that an appropriate final price can be made.

i'm thai and i'm a shopkeeper. i have a stall in a tourist area. my customer are both foriener and thai. it's a big different between thai customer and foreiner customer. it's not about the language,i speak english pretty good. but it's about the manner, well i'm not kind of racist or something, i don't mean that all thai are good. but i'm talking about the whole image of the customer i meet. the whole image is thai are more polite and they don't bargain too much. they know that if some product end with 9 ex. 199 B.,it's mean that the shopkeeper can discount only 9 bath. or when they have to bargain something,it's polite to not complain that the product is too expensive (complain "too expensive" with the shopkeeper is quite rude , 'cause it make the shopkeeper feel that u try to annoy. normally for thai,if they can't buy, they will only walk away without complaining.) well it's the culture that different. i don't want all tourist to act like thai. but please try to be polite with the shopkeeper, bargain with the reasonable price, not with your own stingyness. talk with the shopkeeper as they are a people, not your own slave (many times i met foriener tourist talk with me with the bad words even i try to polite with them.) don't use your foot to point on the thing in the stall. ......................................… be polite with the good shopkeeper. anyway if u meet the bad shopkeeper,it's better to walk away.
