What kind of jewelry is the best buy in Thailand? Gold, silver, diamonds, gems, etc? All the above?
-
I'll be going to a Thailand in a few weeks, and I've always heard that you can get a great deal on jewelry. I'm just not sure where to go or even what to look for. I'd like to buy my wife something. So, anyone know where to find the best deal, and what sort of jewelry in particular is a really good deal in Thailand? (I'll be in Bangkok and Chiang Mai).

Answer:
Thailand is the world largest gemstone exporter so I would say all of the above. As for the above poster, it's not correct. Thai gold can range from 14-18 to 22 K. You've got to check before you buy. There's a large gold mine in Uttaradit, and somehow Australian company got concession to dig it. They digged most of the commercial viable production already. Gold are exported to be processed in Australia and if Thailand wishes, they need to buy back and reimport them for consumption.

gold -- 22kt and 23kt, buy at least a baht. buy at MBK or in Yannawa section of Bangkok or in China town 23 kt gold can be bought at department stores, PIMA gold. Also a good price. Gold jewelry in Thailand is sold very close to the world market price, very little mark up. Wow conflicting info here, I'd listen to ice cube if i were you!

The gold is of 9 K rather than 18 K, this is why is cheap, about gems...um you can get better deals back home, rubies are all faalse.

Just remember you get what you pay for. Gold and Diamonds are always your best deal . Gold 18 k should be hallmarked inside either 18k 18ct or 750. This gold will keep its price far better than a 9k as 18 is double the amount of course and there is such a lot of 9k around that if she was ever to sell 9k then the scrap value is very little . Diamonds have a lot of different qualities if it is cheap then the Diamonds are not of a good quality. So when looking pretend to know what you are looking at so they don't pull the wool over your eyes. i have been to Thailand and there are the trips that they want to take you to a jewelery factory some of the tut tut drivers get a small commission or fuel payed for to take people to these outlets. I think these outlets or factories are ok but they are quite persistent on selling to you so if you aren't satisfied then don't buy. Of course Platinum which the best would be hallmarked PT 900 which is 90% platinum it goes down to pt700 I believe is the best one can buy but the value is twice as much as gold so very expensive but a good investment. I don't know if they sell it in Thailand I guess they do in more exclusive shops. Silver is nice but really no value here. But silver is ok for a cheap gift , some people really like silver and others that's is all they can afford. If you buy diamonds make sure they are real and not simulated or zircons. As for Gems some have value but many today are man made. and the real ones have a huge amount of different qualities. Some people will buy jewelery and think they have a super buy but many do not know about quality. That's ok if they are happy with their ring or bracelet . also in Thailand I believe there are some designer names that are possibly fake

There really are no great deals on jewelry - it tends to be a high mark-up item - That said - there are wholesalers of jewelry - khao sarn road for silver and that should be quite cheap in comparison - Gold here, as sold in the gold shops, is investment grade and sold by weight with a buy and sell price relatively close together - it is almost sold as a commodity and the price fluctuates daily... when it comes to precious stones - either know your stuff or buy it in a name brand department store - there are actually scammers on the street who will tell you that they can sell you stones that they guarantee you can make a big profit on in your country - do not buy on the street or let someone take you to a store etc etc - - sure, it's their brothers store - forget it!!!!

Gold and silver can be bought in gold shops. There are (very) many of them, and the quality is high. Thais buy a lot of gold themselves, as investment or as jewelry (which actually also is an investment). Buying gold or silver bars is safe enough, if you visit a good shop. In Chinatown (Yaowarat) there are many. Jewelry is not a good idea. Yes, Bangkok is a world center of the jewel industry. But only if you are an expert in jewelry, buy something. For example, take rubies: they are found in Thailand and Burma. But it is legal in Thailand to "cook" rubies, to remove impurities or something. That raises the value in Thailand. But it reduces the value elsewhere. Because in most countries "cooking" rubies is illegal. Only a true expert is able to spot the differences.

Buy gems from Ice Cube ( I am sure you will get a discount for being in this forum ) but best place on Earth to buy gold is Dubai. Have brought many jewelry items for Thai Girlfriend ( she chose ) and the prices are to good to be true - look good - but real quality i doubt it but GF happy so everyone's a winner.
