Depends on your needs, you sound like me. I like the freedom to see what I want when I want. haha And with the heat, being on a schedule you sometimes don't get to soak in the sights. You can base yourself in Bangkok and fan out from there. Pattaya on the coast is only 75-90 minutes away by taxi. Chiang Mai is about a 2 hour flight or 12 hour train ride, Phuket is about an hour flight. Bangkok has a lot to see, Grand Palace, Floating Market, Giant Swing, many wats or temples, http://www.bangkok.com/attraction/ Tours in Thailand. http://www.thaiwave.com/tours.htm I have not taken a tour in Thailand and have slowly made my way around Bangkok and Pattaya. Good luck

I have been there twice on visits. No matter where I go I find it better to self arrange my tours. Once you are there the hotels have tours to the places you really want to go. You can take a tour of a city on a tuk tuk and then decide what places you want to visit. You can take a tour from your hotel to different places. I wanted to see the elephants so I went to Chang mai. On a prearranged tour they take you to where then go, at their pace, not yours. But at the end it is a matter of choice.

It depends on if You are Your own person or if You want to be under someone elses control. Pesonally I would be miserable in a tour package. Lots to see and do in Thailand , You don't need someone elses exspensive help.

Travel here is pretty easy so i guess it just depends on what type of travel you like -

If this is your first trip to Thailand I would recommend going with a reputable tour company. If the tour includes air travel pick one that has the option of returning on a later flight so that you can spend time visiting stuff you missed on the tour. I've traveled both ways and find that a lot of time and energy is spent just making local hotel and travel arrangements. Tours give you more time to explore on your own without pressure.
