Do they speak English in Thailand?

  • I want to vacation in Thailand but I am afraid I will get lost and can't find my way back to my hotel. Do the people speak English? What about the hotel manager? How do I find my way around and not get lost?

    Matt - most younger Thai people speak some English as they learn it in school. In the tourist areas where you will be, there will be many people speaking English. At the hotels - for sure. In the bars - for sure. Thai people are very friendly and engaging and will be glad to help you. Make sure you have a name card from the hotel you are staying at - you can use it to show people or taxi drivers. As you walk around, take particular note of landmarks to use as memory aids. Most streets are numbered and many written in English. If you are really worried about this, take your time when you arrive - don't go too far and then go back - repeat several times until you know where you are..

Hi Yes they speak American if you are scared of getting lost maybe you need to go with somebody ?

Some will, but you should perhaps brush up on your thai - they love it if you make an effort, even if you can only speak a few phrases. As for the not getting lost part, maps can help.

In the major tourist areas, yes. Outside those areas not so much. Some people will speak some English but most know only a few words. The street signs are in both Thai and English but most printed material is only Thai.
